"Longbeard"
Coffee Cups = Real Good Luck, Part 3
Fred's Second Merriam's
= 3 Longbeards In The Same Day
After my
shot the remaining wild turkeys did not realize what happened and they
stayed in the area. Then other gobblers and hens joined the group and I
took a bunch of very cool pictures and will put them in a photo gallery
for you to see.
When all the turkeys were
gone I recovered my Merriam's gobbler and Fred took a few pictures while
I walked back to the blind with it. On the way I noticed some red heads
coming out of the corn field 200 yards away that were walking our way.
Quickly Fred and I switched seats in the blind and we gave the red heads
some quiet hen talk. He handed me the tripod and video camera.
A Merriam's longbeard and
two jakes were already out of the corn field and coming up behind us. They
were on the move, obviously headed some where. Fred drew before they entered
our left shooting window. One of the jakes was in front of the longbeard
as they walked along. They didn't stop or change their uphill course. Fred
kept the Kingsway Triad's front and back pins lined up on the longbeard
and waited for an opening.
When the jake finally cleared,
the longbeard was 25 yards up hill and at the last place where Fred had
a shot. The hit was solid and the longbeard went 20 yards and went down.
Fred smiled and said, "The best blood trail you can have is when you watch
them drop."
FRED LUTGER'S EQUIPMENT
COMMENTS:
Kingsway
Archery - TRIAD Double Adjustable Pin Sight
"We kept the inside of the
blind as dark as we could because of the times we had so many turkeys around
us. We wanted to make sure we could draw the bow without being detected.
Even in this dark situation the pins of the Kingsway bowsight were highly
visible. The sight has a built in light but I never had to use it so far.
You don't use a peep with this bowsight. Instead you line up the front
sight pin so it is in between the Triad's two back pins. very similar to
using open rifle sights. With the pins lined up you put them on the target
and let 'er go. Even with the longbeard moving it was easy to get the sights
on it for a fast and perfect shot."
Diamond
Archery - Black Ice
"Once again the Diamond
Black Ice bow performed exemplary. It was so quiet the other birds in the
area were not scared off by the shot. I like the easy way it draws, even
from a sitting position. And with all our traveling and field use the bow
is performing flawlessly."
Grim
Reaper Broadheads - RazorCut
"The broadhead functioned
flawlessly. The gobbler did not fly and since I started using the Grim
Reaper RazorCut I've had no problems recovering this and all the other
gobblers I've shot."
Also...
"The first time we hunted
this area I used my Leopold range finder to check the yardages.
I want to make sure I know the yardages of the trees and objects around
me. It helps me determine yardages when I have a shot opportunity. I really
like using the Trueflight white shield cut feathers. I can follow
my arrow flight and see my hits. Two of the arrows had their feathers matted
down with dried blood and I rinsed them in water and let them dry overnight.
Then I loosened up the feather with my fingers and they came right back
like new. I put a fresh broadhead on the arrows and put them back in my
bowquiver."
"That was my last tag for
Nebraska and next we are off to Texas to hunt a cactus jumping, hill running,
rattle snake side stepping, Texas Rio Grande."
