Day 2 -- Rain, Wind, Cold & Gobblers, Part 2
That afternoon we made our
set up near a different gate overlooking three picked corn fields. The
weather continued to be wet and nasty.
This is Fred (Lutger) and
if he looks like he is dressed for cold weather, he sure is.
And so am I. Believe me
I'm very glad I brought along my I.D.I. Gear Parks. It is very light weight,
rain proof, wind proof, breathable and keeps you warm from 55 to zero.
This parka the perfect answer to cold, wet days like this.
Some jakes walked into the
picked corn field and came in our direction. We did not call. We wanted
to see what they would do.
Cool. Their steady pace
brought them to and through our open gate.
As the leaders investigated
our hen decoy another jake walked around the blind side of the blind and
passed the jakes and decoys, going in the opposite direction.
Their main interest was
in the jake decoy.
The jakes left and half
an hour later a second jake group made the cornfield walk to us. Here is
a closer look as two jakes examine my Calley Morris jake.
Our blind at the gate taught
us plenty about the turkey movement around the cornfields and the areas
around them. Most of the activity was along the edges and near the end
of the day several turkey groups came across the fields and walked up the
hill we had hunted yesterday and went to some unseen roost in the direction
of the river.
Back at the farm house we
got the chill off and ate an delicious home made barbecue dinner. I uploaded
from the phone line and went to sleep. Little did we know that tomorrow
would be the big one ... gobbler wise.
