BOWHUNT
IN NEBRASKA
Nebraska:
First Morning
Before sunrise Fred and I
carried our bows, blind and other gear to the top of a high hill and set
up. The temperature was right at freezing and after the walk I could feel
the chill creeping in while we listened to gobble after gobble from the
river bottom below us. Here are our decoys in turkey luring position.
It is beautiful here and
I took an early morning picture of the high prairie hills surrounding us.
The gobbles and hen talk came past us, but out of sight in the valley next
to us
Two deer walked along the
fence line.
And later two more came
out of the woods below us and looked our decoys over.
10:00 came and we broke
down our setup and looked around the cedar wind break behind the field
where we we had hunted. We saw some wild turkeys in another field.
And some gobblers walking
along an old wooden fence.
And on the way back to our
friend's house we noticed some more wild turkeys in one of the farm's big
fields.
Back at the house we ate
a big breakfast and discussed where we should hunt for the afternoon. We
decided on the side of the hill below the field we had hunted this morning.
Once again we carried our gear and set up in an opening near the bottom
of the hill. We were ready ... but were the wild turkeys?
Once I was squared away I
took my laptop out of my backpack and turned it on. I had forgotten to
turn the sound off and when it played the boot up tune Fred said, "When
the longbeards hear that they ought to come running."
He was joking. But a group
of nearby but unseen hens and longbeard Merriam's must have liked it because
stepped over the top of the hill ... took a look at our decoys ... and
came on down. To "I Get Lucky..."
