BOWHUNT
FOR THE FLORIDA OSCEOLA
 |
In Florida we are
hunting with David Mills of Zolfo Springs, Florida in Central Florida's
Osceola wild turkey country. David is an easy going, likable guy with a
good sense of humor.
David has thousands of acres
available to hunt Florida Osceolas. He understands this unique species
of wild turkey and knows their habitat.
David is now part of the
Woodhaven Sting Team and is hosting Mike Pentecost and several members
of the team on this hunt. To contact David about Osceola hunts, bow
or shotgun, phone 1-863-990-9087. David also guides Alligator hunts. |
Jim Panaro
Jim, Brett Berry Sam McCartney
flew out of Pittsburg, PA, where there was 9 inches of snow, and got off
the plane in Orlando and 55 degrees. Jim hunted in the morning and heard
two gobbes that wouldn't come on over. On the afternoon hunt he went with
Shawn Keleher and Doug Crabree Jr and Sr.
Around 6:00 they heard a
gobble and the Crabtree's and Jim called together. More gobblers responded
and three came out of the woods into the field. They hung up 150 yards
away. One tom was definitely dominant. Doug did a fighting purr and the
dominant gobbler got interested and started walking closer. The two other
gobblers took the lead and went into the orange grove to the left of the
blind. The third tom followed and Jim looked for a place he would be able
to shoot and found it between two orange trees.
When the dominant gobbler
stepped into the space Jim aimed through his 2 power Simmons Pro Diamond
scope and put the cross hairs on its eye and pulled the trigger. The gobbler
dropped on the spot.
This is Jim's first time
in Florida and obviously his first Osceola gobbler. He is a friend of Mike
Pentecost and they met while turkey hunting in Talladega National Forest
in Alabama. They have been friends ever since. They hunt turkeys almost
every year.
Jim has used Mike's calls
before he began Woodhaven Custom Calls. He told me, "Mike's mouth calls
and friction calls are the absolute best calls I have every used. If you
have a call you like and loose that call, when you buy another one it sounds
just like the original call you liked. The call making is so meticulous,
thickness and details are exact on every call, Mike Pentecost is a perfectionist.
Every Woodhaven call is tested before it is packaged and sold."
"Mike began making calls
in his basement and now is one of the major turkey call makers and sellers,"
Jim said. "That was Mike's dream and he is accomplishing it. Good things
will happen to good people."
Jim is a VP of Engineering
and Business Development for an Energy company in Pennsylvania. His son
got his first gobbler when he was nine in Ohio. This year he can hunt in
his home state of Pennsylvania in the Youth Mentor Hunting Program, he
is now 11 and has already taken 2 gobblers.
I asked Jim what he liked
about turkey hunting. He replied, "Everything."
Jim never saw an orange tree
before, "you just pick your breakfast off the tree. We found a tangerine
tree today and we ate some up. This is very different terrain than Pennsylvania.
Here you see turkeys in the orange groves. I'm getting a sun burn and it
is 21 and snowing at home."
