Mike
Pentecost
Mike
Pentecost arrived at David Mills home at 2:00 on Friday afternoon. He came
with Ryan Prince, a friend. They unloaded their gear and got out their
bow's and started practicing with field points. Doug Crabtree had given
Grim Reaper broadheads to Mike and Ryan, saying, "They will shoot exactly
like your field points." The practice ended after Mike set up a Double
Bull blind and heard Ryan shot more arrows from inside the blind.
This morning Shawn Keleher
took them to their hunting place. Shawn had it scouted -- a wood line and
field came to a creek with tall trees that gobblers roosted in. They set
up two Matrix blinds. Shawn got in one. Mike and Ryon sat down in the other,
they didn't want to be cramped and Shawn wanted to be there with them.
They had set the decoys close, a hen to the right, a hen to the left, and
a hen squatting in the middle with a jake behind it facing the blind. The
wind was blowing hard so they staked the corners of the blind down.
It started getting light
and Mike clucked and a Tom gobbled strong, It was close. Hens yelped and
jakes yelped and they heard gobbles in two different directions. Mike yelped
with the WoodHaven Copperhead mouth call and at the same time he clucked
on a new WoodHaven box box call. A distant gobble sounded.
Mike was quiet for a 15 minutes
and he got out a future WoodHaven call named the Vision, a special aluminum
call that will be introduced in 2008. Mike did a kee kee and a gobbler
boomed from 50 yards inside the trees. Mike yelped loud.
Ryan saw the gobbler coming
on his side and whispered to let Mike know. The gobbler stopped in the
open in front of the blind, 45 yards away. He stayed put. Occasionally
gobbling at the hens and jake of the decoy setup.
Unannounced, three hens flew
into the opening and headed straight toward the decoys. The Tom gobbled
and moved to cut them off and keep them from coming to the decoys. Mike
yelped and clucked and then purred on the Vision call. He calling engaged
the hens and they answered and walked single file right up to the decoys.
Still cautious, the gobbler moved slowly, stopping several times, but still
walking toward the hens.
MIke clucked and purred "to
keep things settled". Ryan was videoing today's hunt and he had the video
camera on the gobbler as it came into the mix of real hens and decoys.
When he was 12 yards from the blind Mike lined up his pin above the longbeards's
legs and moved it two inches forward, between the feather crease and the
legs.
He released
The gobbler flipped and pitched
straight up in the air 6 feet and dropped to the ground. He made another
straight up 6 foot jump and hit the ground and expired -- almost
in the tracks where he had been shot.
The hens didn't know what
happened and continued to hang out with the decoys. Ten minutes later Mike
moved the blind and the hens walked away. Mike picked up his songbird gobbler.
When Mike stepped out of
the blind he thanked Shawn for taking him to his good turkey spot. The
trio gathered their gear and gobbler and took the landowner to lunch at
Nicholas Family Restaurant. Mike gave the landowners young son some
turkey feathers and they all had a good visit.
MIKE's COMMENTS
First, Mike thanks the Lord.
Also David Mills for having him down again, as well as Shawn Keleher for
taking them to his turkey hot spot.
Mike shot a BowTech Liberty
set at 65 pounds. He used the same poundage and setup that he does for
whitetails. He told me, "I thought the Grim Reaper Razor Tip broadhead
did an awesome job on the gobbler. It went through him and broke the shoulder
and wing bone. There was a lot of blood too, he could not have had any
left in him."
Mike used a personal favorite
the WoodHaven Copperhead mouth call. Additionally, Mike used calls that
are in final development stage for his company, WoodHaven Custom Calls;
a special Real Hen box call and the '08 Vision.
