BOWHUNT
FOR THE FLORIDA OSCEOLA
Brodie Swisher
After Keith Beam got his
gobbler they stayed in the same setup in case more gobblers were in the
area. An hour and a half later another gobbler answered the call and came
to the fence across the field 150 yards straight out. There were hens with
him and he wouldn't leave them. They used persistent calling and in half
an hour the hens left the gobbler. Then he came to check out the new hen.
As he marched across the
field more hens flew into the field. But aggressive calling pulled him
to the decoys to investigate them. The gobbler strutted up to the decoys.
Brodie needed two more steps for a clear shot. But the gobbler turned and
high stepped after the live hens.
They waited a while and then
slipped out so they wouldn't disturb the area.
The next morning Brodie,
Keith, Doug and John returned to the same pasture as yesterday in hopes
of locating the same longbeard again. About the same time as the day before
the gobbler came out into the field in the same place. Keith made
subtle clucks and purrs and the gobbler made his way down the pasture toward
the hunters. The moment he saw the decoys he went into full strut and did
the "fast paced mean walk" right to the decoys.
He strutted past the hen
decoy on the way to smack the jake decoy. Brodie wasn't about to let another
one get in and out of the decoys so he "dropped the string" as the tom
made his approach to 5 yards. At the shot the gobbler jumped into the air
and back flipped and dropped in less than 30 yards.
This is Brodie's first Osceola
gobbler. Brodie Swisher is a columnists and sometimes Field Evaluator for
Bowhunting.net, a Pro Staff for Double Bull Archery.
Brodie shot the Osceola with
a Grim Reaper 1 3/4 wide RazorTip broadhead. Brodie said he was amazed
at the entrance and exit hole. My shot was less than perfect but the RazorTip
made a devastating wound on the bird and it went down in view.
