Finding A Strut
Zone
MORNING: May 3 - Fred
parked his truck and walked through a big field in the dark, looking for
somewhere that would have a good view of the area. He picked a high spot
in the middle of the field so he would be able to watch the entire field
and some of the surrounding woods. The eastern horizon had a faint
glow at 5:00 and the first gobble sounded, it was a long ways off. Minutes
later a closer gobble sounded in the woods to the North. Five minutes later
a loud gobble came from a ridge above the field.
Fred thought the gobbler
near the field might pitch down into the field when he saw the 3 hen decoys
Fred had out. Instead the gobbler stayed on top of the ridge and gobbled
for two hours. At one point the gobbles moved further away and Fred called
at him with the both the Woodhaven aluminum slate and the Doug Crabtree
mouth call. The gobbler responded but wouldn't come down to the field.
At 8:30 the bird was still
gobbling and a hen crossed the field walking in the direction of the gobbler.
Shortly after things quieted down and at 9:30 Fred walked to the ridge
to check out the area where the gobbler had been. He found a logging road
through the woods on the very top part of the ridge. There were fresh gobbler
droppings in the road. All indications are that this is one of the gobbler's
strut zones.
Then Fred walked back to
camp.
Last night I worked on the
web site until 1:00am. When 4:00 came Fred was ready to go turkey hunting.
But I slept in. TO THE AFTERNOON HUNT...
