Day 6 - More Gobbler Action

Gobbles to the North and East. I opened up a new Woodhaven Matt Van Cise, Sting Team series diaphragm call and called pretty loud. The call was very raspy and gobblers sounded off as well as some hens. I called every 10 minutes and shortly after daylight I saw 2 hens across the clearing to my left.

I yelped at them and one came closer and stopped, looked around, and wandered off.

One of the things that really keeps you on your toes is the cypress knees. Half of them look like turkeys. I regularly work them with binoculars.

Movement in the trees and cypress knees on the far woods line caught my eye. I zoomed in on the area with my camera. Gobblers. "The" gobbler, the slunger longbeard, walked to the edge (200 yards away) and I got a pic. The pic is ok, considering the distance, you can even see his beard sticking down into the grass.

Here the slunger is on max zoom.

I called at him but he was committed to going the direction he was going.

An hour later I picked up a gobbler's fan in the same place.

Here is a full zoom look at the gobbler in strut.

At noon I went to eat lunch and returned at 2:00. A group of cows grazed through the area. That took quite a bit of time.

Later a lone hen walked along the far edge to the left.

As dark 30 came I moved the blind one more time, a little closer to where I had seen the hens today. Tomorrow morning's hunt was gonna be my last. It's time to go home.
