Day
3 - Bad Luck ... Good Luck
Morning: I got to
the woods plenty early and once daylight came I drew my bow, because that's
what I always do so I know everything is ok. It wasn't ... my top pin was
broken and was dangling on the sight bar. Not good. And it wouldn't
fix either so I returned to David Mill's house and sighted in one of the
remaining pins.
Spot-Hogg sent me a new sight
to use on the turkey hunts but it arrived while I was packing to leave
and unfortunately I didn't have time to set it up. I've used Spot-Hogg
sights before and they are double tough. You can bet it will go on my bow
first thing when I get back home.
Once again one of the Woodhaven
guys, "Moxey" Spivey brought a big Tom in. Moxey's
Hunt...
Afternoon: David Mill's
son Colton took me to a new area and I set up in a small open area. I called
every 15 minutes.
At 4:48 I was glassing the
woods and picked up a gobbler's red neck and head. I talked to them on
the Woodhaven cherry slate. They liked in and came to the edge of the woods.
I put the camera cross hairs
on them.

They walked out of the woods
as I purred and yelped at them on the slate. Things looked promising.
From their angle they could
not see my decoys and they looked left and right for the source of hen
talk.
Back and forth, left and
right, their heads turned. I slipped my Nikon Rangefinder out of my pant's
pocket and put it's cross hairs on the middle bird ...
18.5 yards.
Try as I might I could not
see a beard on any of these three jakes. Before long they walked back into
the trees and left.
Once they were out of sight
I popped out of the blind and quickly moved my hen and jake decoys so they
could be seen if more gobblers came from the same direction. It was a good
idea, because at 5:05 I saw a hen walk out of the woods ... with what I'm
looking for walking behind her.

Day 2 - An Off Day
For Me
No gobbles at daylight this
morning. No turkeys either, at least where I was. I guess all the gobblers
were busy hanging out with the Woodhaven crew because today they did all
the good.
In
Florida we are hunting with David Mills of Zolfo Springs, Florida
in Central Florida's Osceola wild turkey country. David is an immediately
likable guy and makes you feel at home from the get go.
David has thousands of acres
available to hunt Florida Osceolas. He understands this unique species
of wild turkey and knows his extensive area like the preverbal back of
his hand.
David is now part of the
Woodhaven Sting Team and is hosting them on this hunt. To contact David
about Osceola hunts, bow or shotgun, phone 1-863-990-9087. |
