BOWHUNT
FOR THE RIO GRANDE

Morning: Updating right from the blind!
My morning plan was to go
to the river and listen for gobbles I got up, took a quick shower,
ate some oat meal, drank some coffee, and walked outside. It was not daylight
out, but it was not dark either. Going to the river would run the risk
of walking up on turkeys on the way to my blind. So I went to the Point.
The Point is in the middle
of the area on the south bend of the river. My ground bind is a thousand
yards from the river but normally I can hear some gobbles there -- that
is, if they are gobbling. I wouldn't be able to hear faint gobbles but
I had a fix for that. Pro Ears, I put on my Pro Ears and settled back in
my chair. (Web site: www.proears.com)
Some mornings they gobble,
some they don't, and some are like this morning, they GOBBLED! It was really
cool listening to the gobblers sound off before fly down time. And just
as enjoyable to hear them on the move to the south and west. They gobbled
off and on until 8:05. Then I heard an occasional gobble as time passed.
Right now it is 10:55am
and it has been quiet for the last hour. When I put my blind up yesterday
afternoon it was in the shade. But that shade tree is on the wrong side
this morning. It is getting hot.
I haven't seen a wild turkey
yet. But I did see the first buck of the year with starter antlers, in
fact there were two bucks. I got pics and will put them up after I go to
town and eat lunch at the Red Barn Restaurant. Today, Hulon is cooking
his semi legendary BBQ brisket and sausage. But that's an hour away. Maybe
a gobbler will show up in the mean time.
