BOWHUNT
FOR THE RIO GRANDE
by
Robert Hoague
Day
2 - Morning
| Robert
Hoague Hunt | Fred Lutger Hunt
I was on the ridge above
the river well before daylight, set up and in my blind. At gobble time
they began gobbling. I waited for better light to call. Several hens called
first and the Toms gobbled occasionally. Once I kicked in the gobblers
picked up the pace and rattled the water in the river.
It sounded promising, with
one consideration, if the real hens went the other way so would the gobblers.
To make a long story short, that's what happened. I waited in my blind
until 11:00 with no turkey sightings and nothing but a couple of far off
gobbles.
My hunt for the day was over.
I had to pack for our turkey hunt with Billy Don at Wild Horse Prairie
Ranch in Burnet, Texas. We were leaving when Fred and the Duck came in
from hunting at dark. Which we did. I got Billy Don on the cell phone and
we met up at McDonalds in Burnett, the only place to eat open after 10:00.
Fred Lutger's Hunt
Fred and the Duck hunted
long hours today. Gobblers answered Fred's calls, hens came to the Henny
Penny and the cows left them alone. But no gobblers came to play.
