Day
1 Nebraska - Bowhunting For The Merriam's
Morning: Continued
When the amorous jake gobbler
finished with Fred's decoy he hopped off and promptly walked away. The
luv struck jake's pictures spanned 21 minutes on my camera.
We looked all around us,
checking for wild turkeys and there were none. I lifted a side of the blind
a little and crawled to the decoy. It was considerably worse for wear.
The beak was broken and hanging by a piece of taxidermied skin. Feathers
were seriously ruffled and some were torn off the back where the gobbler
had gripped it with its toenails. I straightened the nose, smoothed the
feathers and re-seated it in the ground. And returned to the blind.
Fred and I called together,
me on the Billy Yargus diaphragm and Fred on the Woodhaven cherry slate.
Gobbles sounded from the ridge above us. Three jake gobblers, different
ones than the ones who left fifteen minutes ago, came into view at the
top of our hill. I cut and yelped and they came on down.
One of them put on a very
nice strut show, one of my favorite things about wild turkey hunting.

I took pictures and Fred
videoed. Here is a gallery of a dozen pictures. GO...
They investigated the decoy,
the strutter showed off a little, and they went back over the ridge top.
