Before
daylight Doug Crabtree led the way into a cypress head, grunting and walking
on all fours to discuise themselves as hogs so the nearby roosting turkeys
would not detect them. They set up their blind in the middle of a small
open spot. Later, a hen clucked, it was in a tree the blind was under.
Then they saw a gobbler on
a limb in a cypress tree 100 yards away. A hen tree yelped and Doug got
out a new prototype Woodhaven call and responded with low, soft, tree yelps.
A group of bard owls flew in and landed in some trees 50 yards away and
hooted. The gobbler sounded off at the bard owl.
Three hens started clucking
and yelping in their trees on the creek. Moxie used a Woodhaven cherry
christal and Doug switched to the new Copperhead diaphragm call and they
both copied the hens for the next 20 minutes.
A hen to the right flew down
and the gobbler gobbled. The hens by the creek got excited and then flew
down. The gobbler flew down towards the first hen. When he hit the ground
he gobbled. Doug did a fly down cackle and the Tom gobbled.
The 3 hens on the creek did
excited yelps and Doug cut on them hard. The gobbler sounded off, he was
80 yards to the right.
Moxey said he heard the gobbler
strut behind them and Doug clucked and purred. The hens from the creek
sounded close. From the right Doug saw the top of the gobbler's head strutting
throug the cypress knobs, moving toward the sound of the 3 hens.
Moxie purred and clucked
on the Woodhaven chrystal. Doug pointed ... the gobbler was coming. Moxie
moved and Doug lined up the video camera. The Tom was walking closer and
Moxie pulled the trigger. The Tom went down on the spot.
