A
Double For Kindell Keeton and Brett Berry
Kindell Keeton
Kindell
arrived after dark on Friday with Greg Metz. Opening morning Kindell and
Brett Berry went with Mike Pusar to an orange grove. They heard one gobble
and a hen clucking.
This afternoon Kindell and
Brett moved to a hammock at 3:45 and got set up. They waited 15 minutes
and Kindell yelped with the mouth call and Brett answered on a Woodhaven
Real Hen box call. A hen answered, yelping and cutting.
Kindell continued to call
and the hen's sounds moved closer. Kindell caught a glimpse of 5 jakes
following a hen. They circled around behind the blind and they saw them
walking away. The two kept calling and Brett asked Kindell if he could
purr aggressively on the diaphragm. Kindell said, "yea," and started doing
it while Brett slapped his leg. It sounded like a turkey fight and the
jakes stopped. Their heads turned bright red, white and blue and they turned
and came running.
The jakes stopped 5 yards
from the blind and looked all around for the fight. They saw the decoy
and walked to it.
Kindell was sizing up a strutter
jake when Brett said there were two long beards coming. The longbeards
ran to the decoy and the jakes and one longbeard flogged the other longbeard.
They separated and Kindell told Brett (who was videoing) that he was on
the gobbler on the right. Kindell aimed at the gobblers head and pulled
the trigger on his shotgun. The bird dropped immediately. The other birds
ran a short distance and stopped.
Brett Berry
Brett
is from Bristolville, Ohio and flew out of the Cleveland airport to Tampa,
Florida. He arrived a David Mills home late at night. He worked a gobbler
briefly on the roost, when it flew down it went off with a hen.
For the afternoon hunt David
Mills took them to a good area. They set up and waited 15 minutes for the
area to settle down. Kindell yelped and Brett followed up on the Woodhaven
Real Hen box call. A hen instantly responded and worked into the call ...
with 5 jakes in tow. The birds circled and began leaving.
Brett and Kindell decided
to put on a turkey fight with fighting purrs and clucks. That turned the
birds around instantly and they came right in and went to the decoy. Two
longbeards came in from the opposite side.
Kindall shot the one on the
right and the birds didn't leave. So Brett handed Kindell the video camera
and took the shotgun. The remaining longbeard had joined the 5 jakes and
they were all leaving back into the swamp. Brett saw a shot and took it.
The gobbler went down right
away. The two Woodhaven Sting Team duo had just taken a double.
