A
Grand Slam For Bowhunter Eyad Yehyawi
Eyad Yehyawi
Eyad
needed an Osceola to get his Grand Slam with the bow. The hunt began Saturday
morning on a wide open pasture in South Central Florida. The birds were
quiet and later they scouted and looked for an active gobbler.
In the evening Eyad and Doug
Crabtree went to a new area. But David Mills called on the cell phone and
had just seen gobblers strutting on the other end of the swamp. The hunters
moved and set up. Doug called with excited cuts and yelps. They heard a
faint gobble and Doug continued and the gobbles came closer.
The gobblers and 3 hens were
on one side of a creek and the blind was on the other. Doug switched to
excited aggressive calling and one by one the gobblers flew across the
creek. Eyad saw the first fan 80 yards away.
Two gobblers came in to 25
yards and became nervous. Doug purred and soft called and the gobblers
slowly moved to the right. They were going to leave. Eyad had to make an
awkward move to shoot the strutting gobbler. Eyad shot and the gobbler
stumbled and left fast. They waited 30 minutes and looked for the Tom.
They could not find the gobbler. They returned in the morning to look again
and were still unable to find it.
They moved to a new area
for the afternoon hunt and set up the blind at 2:30. At 3:00 Doug made
his first call. At 4:30 Eyad saw two big Toms at full strut 150 yards away.
Doug went to work on them and they gobbled but didn't come any closer.
Eyad saw hens with the gobblers and Doug switched calling techniques and
called to the hens.
Eyad's decoy setup in
the cypress swamp.
The turkey group worked
around the area and Doug continued calling. Then Doug turned the video
camera on and told Eyad that a new Tom was coming down the road to their
left. The longbeard walked in slowly but steadily. Eyad got ready to shoot
and when Doug said he was on it with the video Eyad drew his bow. He released
the arrow when the gobbler was 22 yards and the hit was perfect. The Tom
expired 25 yards away. He had 1 1/4 inch spurs and a 10 inch beard.
This completed the Grand
Slam with the bow for Eyad Yehyawi.
Eyad is a regular visitor
of Bowhunting.net and he told me, "I want to thank David Mills and Woodhaven
for the opportunity to hunt Osceolas. I never would have imagined this
hunt could have been as perfect as it was: the weather, the terrain and
the Osceolas were all that I could have asked for. Hunting with Doug Crabtree
was by far the best calling experience I have ever had. The opportunity
to hunt with a World Class caller and as well as someone who excels in
bowhunting gobblers was an invaluable experience and something I will never,
ever forget."

Eyad gets his picture
taken a few minutes after he got the gobbler. This completes his Grand
Slam.
