Day 2 - Afternoon
- Roy Keefer's Hunt - A Bad Haircut Day
Roy Keefer left a note for
us on the kitchen table, it said he "gave a tom a "Haircut" and he was
going back out. Kenny and I met Eric McCrea at Nachos for lunch and Eric
had talked to Roy. He explained that Roy had shot high and his arrow went
through the top feathers of a longbeard, on video no less. Roy called this
a "Haircut".
If you're acquainted with
Roy than you know he is accomplished with the one liner or one word quip.
He can say something very funny with very few words, that would take us
normal people several minutes to say. The "Turkey Haircut" is an example
of his off the wall sense of humor.
Roy Keefer's Afternoon
Hunt
Roy Keefer and his wife Shelby
(on video camera) were hunting on a flat when he made the morning "haircut"
shot. That afternoon he called and a hen with a big tom came in. (Pictures
lifted from Shelby's video.)

The gobbler was in full
strut and walked closer to the hen. Shelby range finded it and it was 35
yards -- out of bow range.
But
it was coming closer. Shelby kept on it with the range finder and when
it was 20 yards she told Roy.
The longbeard came out of
strut and turned with his back to the blind and took a few steps.
Roy had his pin on the tom and shot . The arrow went through the mesh on
the Matrix blind ... and went to the left of the tom .
Roy could not find his arrow
and when we looked at the video that night we slowed the frames down and
followed it as it bounced up and went by a particular bush. Using this
information the next morning Roy found his arrow.
However, the boss tom did
not leave. He hung around out of range. Roy kept calling and soon a group
of 7 jakes came up. When they saw the "boss" they made goofy noises and
all 7 charged him. In the fight the wise old "boss" showed his stuff and
trounced every jake he could get his spurs and beak into. The jakes definitely
picked a fight with the wrong turkey. (It was cool seeing this on video.)
Roy is returning to the
same area in the morning and he says, "No haircuts tomorrow."
