Day
3 - Morning - Not "A Bad Haircut Day"
A beautiful sunrise this
morning.
This
morning we hunted an area called the "Flats." Eric McCrea took me to a
place where I set up my Double Bull T-5. So far on the hunt we've
only seen gobblers that were 2 /12 years old or older. That's pretty amazing,
but I guess the longbeard toms have chased the jakes out of the creek area
and have it for themselves.
Two hens were the first turkeys
that came in our "Flats" area and a juvenile looking jake approached them.
He was the start of something new. New, as in jakes.
The hens paid no attention
to the young jake and he walked into the long grass and disappeared.
Three more jakes came down
the road we walked down to get to here. They passed directly in front of
the blind. As you can see this area doesn't look anything like the hightr
and thicker brush of the Rocky Creek area.
When they were gone a Periscope
Head popped up in the tall weeds to our left. That was all the look at
him that we got.
Then we saw and took a picture
of a 2 headed jake! (Just kiddin', but it does look like it.)
Hens walked into the area
and worked all around.
Then a gobbler with a 6
inch beard showed up and checked all the hens, there were now over a dozen.
He found one that apparently took a liking to him they walked off together,
just like high school love birds.
Eric had to leave at 10:30
so we broke down the blind and drove to the lodge. Roy and Shelby Keefer
and I drove into San Angelo and ate at Applebee's.
While eating Kenny McCrea
phoned and told me to go to whichever stand I wanted to this afternoon.
That was good news and as soon as we arrived at the lodge I changed into
my blind hunting clothes and went out to the Pecan Tree. The ranch had
a Double Bull blind already there and I used it instead of taking mine.
