Day 1 - Morning
Surprise! In the moonlight
we could see wild turkeys roosted in a big Pecan Tree near where our blind
was. Kenny McCrea and I waited until they flew down. Then I followed Kenny
through a rocky creek bottom and up to the woodsy area where his Double
Bull blind was. We got in quickly.
We are hunting a trail that
runs from the main road for this section down to the rocky creek bottom.
Kenny assured me that Wild Turkeys use it all the time. The trail is to
the left of the blind and a cross trail runs in front of us, it runs along
the edge of the creek bank.
At 7:09 we had the first
traveler, a hen. It stopped and looked my decoy over.

A longbeard was next, at
7:59. It was on the cross trail. I took its picture and reached for my
bow. It turned right and walked down into the creek bottom.
At 8:06 a tom stopped and
eyed the decoy and then walked by it.
There were 3 more gobblers
with it and they came by on the move.

They took a right on the
cross trail but then changed their direction and it looked like they were
going back the way they came.
I put down my camera, picked
up my bow, and drew. They didn't turn on the main trail, instead they continued
down the cross trail. The one with the fattest belly was the one I wanted
and I put my pin on it, however it was walking and the shot angle got worse
with every step. I held up.
We waited until 10:30 and
saw a couple dozen hens. This area has great turkey traffic and when Kenny
McCrea asked me if I wanted to hunt another area I said I said, "lets go
back this afternoon."
And we will...
