Day 1 - Afternoon
Seeing all those bearded
turkeys made me hungry so we drove into San Angelo to eat at Nachos. The
owner Simian does mexican food right, there may be a few others as good
but there are none better. I ate a Steak Tapioca with Simian's hottest
ranchero sauce. It was way good.
When we returned to the Pecan
stand we set up my T-5 Double Bull where we could watch the main trail
and the cross trail. That's Kenny McCrea below, he wants to video the hunt.
Video is not really my thing but we'll give it a go.
The first turkey we saw
was came down the main trail at 3:52.
From then on we had a continuous
flow of hens, mostly solos, but sometimes two or three together.

A Tom walked up from the
rocky creek bed and stopped at the cross trail intersection. I had the
blind's shooting windows closed on that side and slipped off my chair and
on my knees and when Kenny had the tripod in place I opened them, one at
a time. The Tom did not notice. Kenny took a picture of him.
Space in the blind was tight
and I gripped my bow by the handle and guided the limb past Kenny's tripod
leg.
Putt!
The Tom saw my top bow limb
move and promptly turned and walked back into the creek bed.
Then a hen came down the
trail that had ruffled feathers on her back. This time of year that means
she has probably been breading with a gobbler.
Kenny signaled me that a
huge Longbeard was on the main trail to our right. A pot bellied longbeard
was looking at my decoy. He had the look that he was about to hit the road.
I got my bow and hooked my release on the string loop. Kenny moved the
video camera to a split in the window. The big tom putted at the decoy,
turned and started walking back down the trail.
I drew. He was walking zig
zaggey and I struggled to get my pin on him. He stopped. I found him with
my pin and shot. But he was already moving and the arrow bounced off his
wing feathers and he flew away.
Another tom walked up out
of the creek and roosted in the large pecan tree. Before long the tree
was the sleeping quarters of over two dozen hens and two gobblers. They
were 10 yards from us and I took pictures. A 3rd big tom came in late and
flew up in a smaller, nearby tree on the river bank.

Once it was was dark we
slid under the bottom of the blind and bent over as we walked down the
trail. We did not spook them. And we left all our gear in the blind.
When we arrived at the lodge
Roy Keefer and his wife Shelby had arrived for their hunt. We talked for
a while and everyone turned in for the next days turkey hunt.
