DAY
4 - Tornado
MORNING - Lots Of Fred
Action
Fred and Doug returned to
the new roost area on the river. They set up the Matrix at edge of oat
field underneath a large pecan tree. Soon a bird gobbled 70 yards away
from a nearby pecan tree. He gobbled again and flew down 35 yards from
the decoy. A longbeard, he stood still, watching the decoy.
Doug yelped on the his diaphragm
(Doug Crabtree signature series from Woodhaven) and the gobbler popped
into a full strut. Doug yelped, the longbeard gobbled.
There was a hard crosswind
and it caused the hen decoy to slip down the stake, which is what real
hens do before breeding. The longbeard went into a tight strut and spit
and drummed. The gobbler began walking to the right of the blind.
Fred drew, aimed and shot.
And ruffled its tail feathers. He hadn't allowed enough for the wind.
Doug opened a shooting hole
in the back mesh. Fred shot and hit the zipper in the blind.
But look at this, the longbeard
was walking to 2 Kent Daddys, Bigggg Boys. Ground Draggers. Slungers. They
were 125 yards away, wooing hens. When the longbeard got to them both Kent
Daddys chased him out of the field. Then they returned to the hens.
At 10:30 my buds broke down
the blind. On the way home they saw 5 jakes in the woods, walking in the
direction of the Gate. Fred dropped Doug off at my house and parked behind
a camp trailer. Quickly, he walked the blind, (which was already in place).
Fred yelped. Gobble ... 100
yards away. A minute later Fred yelped again. Gobble .. 60 yards. They
appeared in the cedars 30 yards away, 5 jakes. Fred was ready, bow in hand,
with the blind shooting window open. But the birds didn't offer a shot
opportunity and disappeared in the cedars.
AFTERNOON - Tornado
The Point - After
3 hours in the blind I heard a loud cracking noise in the sky. Everything
looked ok.
CRACK!!! Louder.
Everything got dead still.
Whoooommmm. Big wind. Leaves, twigs and debris filled he air. Oh, oh, the
blind lifted up and I grabbed a window and struggled to hold it down. (The
blind had been staked down.)
Whoosshhh. It was gone. Wow!
After that I didn't hear
any more gobbles.
Meanwhile Fred and Doug
grabbed the sides of their blind as they watched a tornado coming across
the field at them. Choking dust, sticks and debris filled the air as the
funnel passed above them.
Later they saw a hen walking
on the river's edge. Near dark they roosted several gobblers. Tomorrow
morning will be their last hunt and this is where they will be.
For Dinner - Doug made
another specialty,
Deep Fried Venison. It was excellent. Not quite as good as Alex Alexander's
but still in the upper 1 pecent.
