DAY 3

MORNING - Lots Of Action For Fred

Fred and Doug returned to the Gate area and set up their Double Bull Matrix blind. Distant gobbles came from the river and then scattered gobbles from other directions told them the toms were off the roost and looking for hens.

Doug called off and on as the morning passed. He was working a gobbler and turned the opposite direction so it would sound like the hen was leaving. Surprise, from that direction came several gobbles. These gobblers  were fired up.

Five gobblers ducked under the gate and walked briskly to the blind. Fred saw a 10 yard shot coming up and picked one that was clear of the other birds. The Matrix mesh was up on this side (for a shooting window) but where Fred had to aim there was a wrinkle in the fabric. He aimed carefully through the wrinkle and touched his release trigger.

High right. Real high.

Fred concluded that it was some visually goof up on his part due to the wrinkly mesh. The gobblers were still standing around. Fred took a second shot.

High again.

A third shot opportunity a little further yielded the same result. Once the birds were gone Fred broke the blind down and went to my house. Something was wrong.

Fred shot 5 arrows at my Cube target. A tight group, 12 inches high and 3 inches left. Yikes! He checked his rest and sight, readjusted them and got it shooting like he always shoots.

Afternoon - The Point - Day 3

Fred Lutger hunted the Gate again and saw 2 hens. Doug Crabtree roosted some birds along the river, half a mile north west from the roost area we have been hunting.

THE POINT - Something New

Putting the decoys near the blind doesn't seem to be working right now. They look at them but won't get close to them so I'm switching tactics today and putting  them 50 yards away, and instead of being in the open I put them in some brush. (It's worth a try. If something isn't working you have to do something else.) Here are the decoys.

Today I've got the T-2 Double Bull blind. It has shooting windows and horizontal mesh, viewing windows.

After getting squared away I called on the aluminum Woodhaven slate. I thought I heard a faint gobble!

I yelped a short volley and shut up. Yea, I heard a gobble.

I cranked it out on the aluminum slate for a minute and stopped. The next gobble was within 200 yards. I closed the blind's windows in back of me as they hammered down on gobbles. There they were, along the fence in front of me.

I clicked my camera on and caught them as they came into full view. There are 4 in this picture but there were more behind them.

They turned in my direction and walked closer. I got another picture.

My brain said, "get your bow," but I  couldn't resist this picture at 10 yards.

I swapped the Sony for the BowTech and hooked my release on the string loop. The red heads walked to the left of my blind. I had a window open to cover that contingency and drew. My pin was slightly ahead of the closest one. I tried to adjust and get it in his body but his next step put him behind some cedar limbs.

This picture cost me. But it's a good one. Here it is in wallpaper size for your computer

I heard lots more gobbles but none came to me. Ahhhh yes, it was a swell afternoon in the turkey woods.

For Dinner Doug made another specialty, Cabbage and jalapeno deer sausage. It was unreal good. It's embarrassing to think how much I ate. Ummmm good again!
