A Little Dance ... "Slunge" !!!
SATURDAY May 7
Morning
Gobble! A close one from
the woods behind me on the left side. I called and since the blind was
closed on that side I reached to open a shooting space in the Matrix 360.
A hen walked out of the woods and stopped a few feet from the blind. I
couldn't risk moving the blind's window now.
Oh oh! A "Slunger" (real
big boy) walked out behind her. I opened the blades on my Innerloc
Expandable broadhead because I was going to have to shoot through the mesh
or the wall of the blind. The blades snap firmly in place in the open position,
no problem here.
"Slunge" stopped in the farm
road and blew up. I had to take pictures through the mesh and the sun was
shining on it so the pics were not as clear as I would have liked. But
that's picture taking when you're hunting, stuff happens
I zoomed in on the Slunger
so you could see the length of the beard and the size of this big gobbler.
He slammed his wing tips
on the ground and spit and drummed, and danced all around marking the dusty
road with his wings and tracks.
I swapped the Sony for the
BowTech. I guessed ol' Slunge for between 25 and 30 yards. Right in my
no shoot zone, and even more so since I would have to shoot through the
mesh or fabric.. As he danced around I waited for him to get close enough
for a safe shot.
Ok ... it's lookin' good
... the hen started walking and went right my the blind. And then turned
toward the field. The gobbler took a short cut and left out the part where
he should have walked by men. I slid the mesh up and got the Sony.
A cow walked by the Slunge
and I zoomed in all the way. As you can see this is one big boss gobbler.
The call that works best
for me -- meaning brings in the gobblers -- is the green Doug Crabtree
diaphragm that Woodhaven Calls makes. I got it out and spread it
all over the Slunger. He liked it ... and walked right to the fence and
it looked like he was gonna come on down. I shut up. Enough said.
Slunge dropped his strut.
I'm thinking, "Duck under that fence and come over here."
Woops! Trouble! Spelled
J. A. K. E. S. They busted out of the woods 15 yards away, looking in my
direction. One saw the hen they hurried along fence.
Bent on catching up to the
hen.
Last thing before I left
I checked to see the strut marks the Slunger had made. Aha, the road was
covered with markings. Here is a picture of some of them...
And a closer view. Ain't
it cool...
And the dance hall where
Slunge really got with it and danced for the hen this morning.
At 11:00 I loaded my gear
in the truck and came in to work on this hunt. I gotta tell ya it was something
big just being in the turkey woods this morning. Life is good. I am truly
blessed to be able to live my life like this.
AFTERNOON HUNT
A couple of gobbles way in
the distance sums it up this afternoon. I hunted the Gate. Tomorrow is
the last day of the season.
