Doug Crabtree is bowhunting on a private
ranch, the Hawkins Ranch. The ranch is 3,500 acres owned by Arlan Hawkins.
The ranch manager is Jackie Bishop.
Today, Stuart, a fishing Charter
Guide is hunting also. |
Day 2
Doug went with Stuart, another
offshore fishing guide, and Jackie to pasture #11 and set up before daylight
along the edge of a field with a pond. At first light a gobbler sounded
off in the distance. Doug called aggressively for several minutes and the
tom gobbled constantly. When the birds flew down some hens went toward
the gobbler.
The hunters remained in
the blind until 9:00.
Doug took a walk. On the
way back to the blind he called several times. Then he asked Jackie to
answer him and Doug walked to the far end of the field and called. Jackie
answered and they called back and forth as Doug returned to the blind.
As Doug set foot in the blind
2 toms gobbled at the edge of the field. Doug Hammered them, trying to
coax them out of the grove. They talked but didn't play.
Time for lunch.
Afternoon: Jackie
and Doug went to roost some birds. They saw several groups of wild hogs.
At sunset Doug called and a gobbler answered 600 yards away. They located
him. There were 7 other gobblers with him. After dark the two hunters slipped
out.
It's looking good for tomorrow
