Bowhunt For The Merriam's
In Nebraska
Day
1 - Fred Gets First Gobbler Down
After dropping me off Fred
Lutger saw some strutters in the cotton wood trees. Doug snuck along the
fence to a gate and set up the Matrix blind. From his high vantage point
Fred could see birds all around the area. At 5:30 some hens came into the
area. Gobbles sounded.
A hen yelped and came right
to the Cally Morris hen decoy and pushed against it with her chest. Instantly
the other hens ran to her and circled the hen. Three gobblers joined them.
One gobbler strutted and pushed his way to the decoy, spitting and drumming
one foot away from the decoy.
Two more gobblers came to
the gate in full strut facing the blind. Fred had the netting down on the
Matrix blind and when the gobbler was 10 yards away he shot through the
netting. The arrow hit at the base of the bird's\ wattles and the gobbler
went down instantly. He flopped and that spooked the other birds.
Fred got the first Merriam's
of our Nebraska bowhunt.

the mesh without deflecting. I checked the broadhead after it went
