Bowhunt For The Merriam's
| Day 1 |
Day 2
Nebraska
- Day 1
MORNING - First Day
We drove straight through
(after the Rio Grande Hunt) and arrived at
our motel in Northern Nebraska at 3:30am. At daylight we stopped and got
coffee and, surprise, home made cinnamon rolls and followed our handwritten
directions to the property we were going to hunt.
When we turned into the mile
long driveway -- a picked corn field on the right and a 50 yard wide cedar
wind break on the left -- two gobblers were in the road 100 yards ahead.
They walked into the cedars and when we drove by we saw them and a longbeard
strutter.
We met the landowner, an
archery club buddy of Fred's, and he showed us on our aerial map (from
MyTopo.com) where the boundaries of the ranch were. Then he drove us around
and pointed out promising areas. We saw wild turkeys in several areas.
We drove to the cedar wind
break. Two 2 gobblers were walking along the edge way ahead. We set up
two blinds and decoys on a wide path through the trees. Doug called and
we waited. And waited.
When it was time to leave
I said I wanted to stay here and Fred and Doug left to hunt elsewhere.
Fred hunted near near
a gate in the barbed wire fence by one of the ranch roads. Terry told him
the turkeys came through the area in the afternoon on their way to the
roost trees.
Doug set up where
he had seen turkey tracks and strut marks. And this position gave him a
good view of a large area. He saw scores of wild turkeys during the afternoon
and got a handle on their movement patterns and roosting areas. He
left the blind there for the morning's hunt.
Fred - First Bird
Meanwhile, at his gate,
Fred had a hen butt his Cally Morris decoy and attract 3 gobblers. Go

Getting A Break In The
Wind Break

And staying in the wind
break got me in some turkeys and pictures. To
My Hunt & Pics....
At dark we all met in camp and
listened to the gobbles coming from the river, wooded valleys and in the
cottonwoods at the end of the wind break. We hung our 2 gobblers up and
visited with Terry for an hour. When we returned to the motel it was 10:30
and I uploaded until midnight.
Believe me, it is tired city
in our room. Fred 's snoring sounds like a chain saw going on and off.
Here is a picture of Doug
in his make shift Ear Plug Apparatus. (If you know him don't tell
him about this pic and ruin my surprise) :-)
Yea, tired city. The alarm
goes off at 4:30am. It's gonna hurt ... but I can't wait.
