MORNING - First Day
Robert - Rain fell
all night and the farm road we drove in on was very slippery. Fred said,
"If if it keeps raining I might not be able to drive all the way in so
if I'm not there by 1:30 start walking.
I carried my blind and gear
downhill to a field. It was muddy and I set up where I entered the field.
When gobble time came there were plenty. Several toms were roosted near
here. When turkeys started flying down I heard some hens and the
gobbles got distant.

At 9:30 a jake flew into
the field from the roost area. A few calls got his attention and it came
to 60 yards. This is a very juvenile looking jake and wouldn't come to
my decoys. I think he was afraid of the big red head on the jake.
At 1:00 turkey hunting is
over in Illinois so I left the blind (Double Bull T-5) in place and walked
up the hill and, since it had rained this morning, I started walking. Fred
met me on the road with a Wheeler and we drove out. He had gotten stuck
leaving his hunting area. Once he was out he got the 4-wheeler from camp.
Fred - Fred was late
and 4 longbeards were gobbling where he wanted to set the blind. It was
getting light and he set up at the edge of the field 75 yards from the
roost tree. The birds flew up to a high ridge and gobbled for two hours
but didn't come to the field. It started raining and rained hard. After
that there was no action.
Doug & Billy Yargus
- Woodhaven Sting Team member Billy Yargus drove over and went with Doug
to run the video camera. Doug called in a bearded hen, which is legal this
season in Illinois, and Doug shot at it and missed. Later Billy called
in 5 jakes and Doug shot and missed. After the hunt Billy returned
home.
John O'Brien - Fred
took him to a blind on a creek bottom facing a field. There were lots of
gobbles. At 8:00 John saw a gobbler walking past his blind going to the
decoy. John shot it at 12 yards. (Shotgun)
