Hunt Report 5
We hunted a new area and
spent a long time in the woods today but the report can be said in just
three words. Rain. Cold. Wet. A few deer were seen but no action.
Hunt Report 6
It rained in the morning
but it stopped and we got out before 1:00 in the afternoon. I returned
to the thicket with the left and right scrapes.
Today I toted along my IDI
Gear parka and pants because the weather predicted snow flurries, wind
and cold. A few minutes into the hunt a buck walked right in front of the
stand.
The weather prediction was
right. It drizzled for a while, then it rained. I pulled on the IDI Gear
and felt it cut the wind. Snow began to fall. The weather man was right
today.
Weather wise, the rest of
the afternoon continued to get colder and it alternated between sleet and
snow flurries. But deer were moving. Another young buck walked by.
The 3rd buck came downhill
in the thicket and went to the scrape to the left. (You can see it in the
leaves in front of the buck.)
Another buck walked by in
the trees down hill and behind me.
At deer-thirty a doe walked
by the scrape and came near my tree. Two more followed, a button buck and
another doe. Behind them in the trees and brush a larger deer took shape.
A big doe. I eased my camera out of my jacket pocket and it made a faint
noise. The closest doe, about 6 yards away and in front of me, looked right
at me. I froze.
The big doe glanced around
and forgot about it. The other two deer were not interested in checking
me out. However, the one that heard me was more persistent. It stuck its
nose into the air and tried to get my scent. But it didn't. Then it realized
the other deer had passed by it hurried after them.
The last 20 yards of the
hill is extra steep and because of the rain and snow, today it had the
added fun of being very slippery. I could not keep my footing standing
up and wound up making my unsteady way on my hands and knees.
Back at our the farm house
James grilled us Black Angus steaks and we had dinner and visited. Afterward
I took a picture of one of James's bucks, this wide boy scored 197.
