Nolan's Whitetail University Writers Camp:
Floyd Jeffcoat Floyd hunted on a managed farm that has had minimum hunting pressure. They have ground blinds and treestands by food plots. Floyd saw over 30 different bucks in the 8 days he hunted there.
Floyd is shooting a 10-Point Crossbow with a 125 grain Grim Reaper broadhead. It has a scope with three red dots for 20, 30 and 40 yards. Floyd raised the crossbow and the dots were too faint to see. He had an extra battery and he slipped that in the slot. It was a dead battery too. Floyd could have got him in the scope and shot but. as he said, "I don't believe in shooting at a deer unless I can kill it. I know that if you hit it in the right place it will die. I just didn't want to wound this big buck. So I didn't shoot." On his last hunt he hunted all day. At noon a tall and wide 10-point walked into the beet field and fed for 45 minutes. But he didn't come close enough. The does and bucks were very active in the afternoon. Floyd heard a lot of bleating and grunting saw another buck fight. During the hunt he saw 3 bucks that were the huge buck type as well as 5 more with heavy racks in the "shooter" class. Floyd began hunting when he was 10 years old in Texas. He had a passion for hunting and started bowhunting in 1970. It was a 60 pound Bear recurve with wooden arrows. He switched to a compound in 1992 and then switched to the crossbow 5 years ago. "I've hunted a lot with bows
and love being out in the woods. It's a good day any day I can be out.
I throughly enjoyed this hunt. I got really into the groove of getting
up, hunting, eating, going to bed and going hunting again."
