We are deer hunting out of Clendening Lake Marina near Freeport, Ohio. For lodging and information contact Robb or Annette at 740-658-3691.

During the night it rained ... and then it double rained. A real monsoon storm. It stopped around 8:00am and Wade and I went to a nearby farm and set up to hunt from a hay barn that overlooked a shelf of land that is an obvious deer funnel with lots of trails and several scrapes.

That afternoon we went to James place to hunt.

Mike Jordan hunted a treestand on a shelf on a steep slope, overlooking a network of deer trails and at least two scrapes visible from the stand.

First up was a young 10 point with good body size and a rack with long tines and width but lacking in mass to make the cut set out by James. The buck that worked the scrape 23 yards from Mike. It left down the steep hill to the left. Soon a forky checked the scrape out and walked up hill to another trail and left to the right.

Then a doe came from the left and stopped at the scrape. It kept looking back and Mike looked too. The same 10 point was trailing the doe. So the doe went to the higher trail and stopped.

When the buck saw the doe above him he started uphill. The doe ran down to the area where Mike was and leaped from the trail it was on, covering several yards and stopping in the brush to hide -- only 3 yards from Mike's tree. The buck came down the trail and stopped where the doe had jumped and put its nose to the ground. Unable to pick up the does scent it continued on the trail and disappeared downhill. As soon as the buck disappeared the doe left in the opposite direction.

At dusk 5 does came through on the trail above Mike. Behind the does was a big, mature, very wide buck with extra long main beams.

My Hunt
I hunted in a locust tree above a network of trails. The stand was about 30 feet high and definitely higher than I usually hunt, I was glad to have the FallGuy full body harness and retractor.

The wind was not constant but when it cranked up it was very windy. A buck came through on a trail 100 yards away. I tied to take its picture but couldn't get it in focus. As daylight faded some deer passed by at the base of my tree.
