Ohio Rut Hunt

The internet connection situation here is shaky. This is our first update. 

Brian Richard (Whitetail University Field Staffer)
Brian Richard got the first buck of this hunt. He hunted in a treestand near Jocky Hollow wildlife management area for two days. Brian has guided whitetail hunts with Wade Nolan in this area in previous years. Brian knows how to target bucks during the rut. He has seen bucks every time he hunted the Jocky Hollow stand, mostly they were chasing does.

As he got down from the stand on the second morning and untied his bow from his pull up rope he heard a buck grunt in a nearby thicket to the west. The buck was on the same trail that Brian was standing in. He nocked an arrow and got down on one knee.

Brian grunted once. He heard the buck coming and although he could not see it yet he drew his bow. Antlers came into view 15 yards away. The buck walked out on the trail and suddenly stopped 10 yards from Brian -- unsure of what he was.

Brian released his arrow and saw it pass out of sight into the bucks vitals. Heart shot, the buck wheeled around and ran toward the thicket ... and crashed before he got there. 

Brian has hunted Ohio before but this is his first Ohio buck. We discussed showing the entrance would on the buck but decided it was too graphic for posting. The cut was very large and obviously did the job. It was a 3 blade 1 3/4 inch Razortip and as the Grim Reaper Broadhead slogan says, Bryan "watched 'em drop"

Brandon Jeffress (from Indiana)
Brandon Jeffress is hunting by pontoon boat along the shore of Clendening Lake (where we are staying). His strategy includes using a climber treestand and hunting a new area near the lake each day. He has seen a lot of bucks but they were on the move or chasing does and out of range. 

On this morning Brandon report s, "I tightened the string on my Bear Truth bow as this buck moved within the 20 yard danger zone." ("Tightened the string" is an Indiana term for drew the bow.) 

His treestand was at the "head of a bay" and he got a shot at this Ohio 8-point (below). It went less than 100 yards and was easy to find. Brandon loaded it in his pontoon boat and gave it a ride to camp. Brandon also shot his buck with a Grim Reaper broadhead.
