Jan 3 & 4
I hunted 4 different places, same result. Nothing.

Wednesday, Jan 2
Morning: it was 15 and brutal cold. I was there. The deer were not.
Afternoon: It was a regular deer parade at the Last Barn. I got most of it on video. One thing that you will see is a doe starts snorting at the blind. Actually, the black backdrop fabric I have on the window behind me came off and was moving and the deer was concerned about it. She snorted several times, not the loud "I'm getting out of here" snort -- a softer snort. She finally quit and returned to browsing.

TUESDAY, Jan 1  --  BACK IN THE BUCKS

Time for a visit to the Last Barn. It is an add-on to an old outlying hay barn on my property. I built it out of wood panels covered with tin panels so it would fit in with the old barn the deer are used to. Once inside I set up my video camera on a tripod and settled back. It was 2:47pm. Here is a pic from inside the ground blind.

I brought my laptop and did some web work while I waited for something to happen. Later I saw a lump that I didn't remember being there, out in the dried grass. I watched it and it moved a bit. Then it put its head up and I saw it was a doe. It was browsing on something out in the weeds about 70 yards from me -- in the direction of the Rolled Wire stands. I took this picture at 5:32.

As I watched the doe something further back in the trees caught my eye. Another deer. And this one had its head thrust out level with its body ... and I saw a big, wide, tall tined rack. It was trailing and the trail led to the doe. The buck caught the doe by surprise and the doe cut and ran into the woods.

The buck stopped for an instant and I got a picture of it.

The buck went into the trees after the doe. Then I noticed a second buck coming on the trail of the first. This one was a nice 8-point. He bailed off into the trees, too.

I kept my eye on the trees and pointed the video camera at them, just in case. But they didn't show again.

Soon two more does came across the dried weeds. Then two young bucks hurried up to them and then got in a fight. I tried to get it on video but just couldn't stay on them. When a doe came out of the trees and passed by the other does one of the bucks went into pursuit mode and chased it away. But I kept a look out in case it was the doe the long tined buck was after earlier.

Daylight faded and soon I was left alone. I loaded up my gear and went home. Last year, the way I was set up I couldn't see the area toward the Rolled Wire. Apparently I missed some of the action back then.
