Bowhunt For Deer
2007 Deerhunt HOME PAGE } October Writers Camp Hunt | Billy Don Hunt | Sponsors Dec 23: Sunday - A Turning Point? AFTERNOON: I spent two 1/2 hours staring at the woods around the food plot and watched daylight turn into to low light. When I was ready to leave I noticed a deer walking in the tall grass and trees to the north. The light was too dim to see it good but the movement above his head, as he walked, had a story to tell. This was definitely a buck. It took its time but finally walked into the food plot clearing when it was dark. Its meandering, casual course brought it's shadowy form within 20 yards of me. My binoculars showed the buck's big body and a blurry but wide, dark rack with several hard to make out tines. I waited 10 minutes after the shadowy buck's figure left. There was no way I would've tried to sneak out with him in the area. You may have noticed that the hunting has been slow lately. But maybe things are gonna pick up now. This was a big buck, and the thing I like about him is he knows where I hang out. MORNING: I went to
the Point this morning, it was 19 degrees, and apparently too cold for
everything wild but me.
First, so we wouldn't leave our scent around, Perry and I generously sprayed Scent Killer on our boots, hands and clothes. To make the scrape I used the always available Handy Scrape Making Tool, I broke off a dead limb. And raked, down to the dirt, in the grass -- right under one of the overhanging limbs in the clump of trees the blind is hidden in. Earlier I had mixed Active Scrape (from Wildlife Research Center) with 24/7 Unscented and I shook the smelly granules into the scrape. Perry left and got in the ground blind and hunted. A little before dusk a doe came up straight down wind from the scrape and stood around in the high grass with the wind blowing. I videoed the doe. Just before dark the wind laid down and I got out of the blind and went home. The BowTube video of this hunt is called Fake 'Em Out. SATURDAY MORNING: Saturday
nothing happened at the food plot and I came home at 9:30. After lunch
and some Christmas shopping I picked up the game camera disk at the food
plot. A very nice young buck had been there and posed for two pictures
for us.
