The morning temperature was just below freezing. Everybody slept later than the usual 6:00am which took the edge off my recent short night's sleeps. At 8:00 we drove to the Pond stand and looked for Bryant's arrow. No luck. The last blood was marked with florescent pink flagging (I like that color because you can see a small piece 100 yards away.) We all got down on our hands and knees and searched the immediate area for the next blood spec on the ground, spot on a rock, or smear on a weed. We looked hard and found nothing new. Then we sectioned off a hundred yard circle from the last blood and inspected every clump of trees and place where a deer could hide. Nothing. We looked further out and eventually we all wound up back at the last blood's pink flagging. Everybody was bushed and disappointed. I suggested we take a break and go eat and return with new energy. Bryant and Jensen agreed and we all said, "We are not giving up." Jensen wanted to look for his wild hog before we drove to town and we took up that track. There was a little more blood sign. But that stopped too. Then Jensen sharp-eyed another blood spot on a dried grass leaf. It was in a different direction than the trail had been going. Jensen and Bryant picked up more sign and I walked ahead to where the trail seemed to be leading, a place where I 'd hunted in year's past. A finger of scrub trees and cedars along shallow creek that has a deep spot that collects water in wet years. There was a lot of water in it. As I walked through the finger I smelled the "boar hog" odor and looked around. The yellow and red fletching of an arrow was sticking up a few steps away. The wild hog was hooked up to it. I called to Jensen, "Here's your arrow." And added, "And some more blood" Jensen and Bryant hurried
over. Jensen saw his hog. This was his first animal with a bow. He was
beaming. Here is Jensen Tyme with his bow bagged wild boar. CONTINUED...
