Bryant and Jensen arrived at 2:am and we all hunted in the morning. We had some sightings but no shots. For the afternoon hunts Bryant went to the Pond stand, Jensen hunted the Back 200 and I returned to the Corner. Some does walked by me at 35 yards at deer-30. As Jensen waited in the tripod stand he heard some hogs grunting behind him. The next thing he knew two black hogs walked into view. Both were big hogs but one was particularly large. Both hogs stepped into his shooting lane but the larger one was a little too far away. The closest hog was only a few steps away and Jensen came to full draw and aimed as the hog turned quartering away. The arrow hit and Jensen saw blood splatter. The hog ran into the brush and the other hog followed suit. Jensen saw blood on the ground and the trail looked promising. He went to pick up Bryant. Meanwhile Bryant was having his own hunting adventure, but not with hogs ... with a big buck. The Pond stand is a tripod located at the crest of a hill near a heavily traveled deer trail that ends 60 yards away at a pond. Bryant spotted a buck approaching on the deer trail. When the buck was across from Bryant the buck paused and looked into the cedars. This was a big buck. Wide antlers. Heavy beams. And 9 points. Bryant drew and aimed for "the stuff." The buck took a couple of steps and Bryant released. Bryant heard the arrow hit but in the swirl of motion he didn't see the actual impact of the arrow. The buck jumped a little and then walked away. When Bryant got down he could not find his arrow ... and the sparse blood trail ran out in 15 yards. When they got to my house Bryant and Jensen told me their stories. Then we took our flashlights and went to track and recover the hog and buck. We found more blood spots and trailed the buck another 40 yards and could not find anything else. We looked in the immediate area without any luck. I suggested we stop and take up this trail in the daylight. The temperature was in the low 30's and the deer would be fine. We went to look for Jensen's hog. The blood trail took us 20 yards and petered out. We decided to look for it in the daylight, too. Tomorrow morning we will take up the track again. |
