October 21 - 23: Bowhunting - "A Proper Adventure" Casey Gunnels (KC) A This is Casey's first hunt with his traditional longbow. He has taken it with him in the past but woulnd up using the compound. The first morning he managed "to miss a doe, but just barely." That evening he got another shot on a doe and "she jumped string worst than any animal I've ever seen. But 20 minutes later some pigs came to the feeded and I made a decent shot." The rest of the hunt Casey enjoyed hunting with his longbow and getting away from his last semester of college. Casey is a glazier (a glass man) and a Senior in Business Administration at A&M Commerce. He's been bowhunting for 10 years and taken mule deer, whitetails, wild turkey, javelina and wild hogs. On his first hunt Charles Lamb had two does come toward him but walked behind him. A hog came in from the left rear and walked around. Then it and the does left. The second hunt he saw a 4-point behind him looking in his direction. The buck walked around and moved 60 yards in fromt of Charles. The buck bolted and then Charles heard a group of hogs and spotted them behind them. He saw 2 big sows, some young picg and a big daddy Alpha hog. But they picked up his scent and busted out. Later another group of hogs busted him. The 3rd hunt was Charle's first time to hunt in a Double Bull blind. Twelve wild turkeys walked through. He saw 3 does but they weren't quite where he could shoot. Charles heard wild hogs and before long he had hogs front and back, the ones behind him started rooting behind him. A doe gave Charles a shot opportunity and he took it. There was a loud "ping" and his arrow flew back a few yards in his direction. He had hit the feeder leg. When he looked the insert and broadhead (85 grain Slick Trick) were sticking in the feeder leg. Charles was shoting a coupound. He told me, "I had a great time. The ranch is nice, the food is awesome. It was well worth it and I saw animals every time I sat." Charles is an electrical technician for the Dallas Morning News at their printing facility in Plano, Texas. He has bowhunted for 3 years and is looking for his first harvest. He started getting into bowhunting and found Bowhunting.net and BowhuntingTalk.com. There he met Timm and they hunted together in Oplin, Texas. He say's he is upgrading his gear in the near future. Rod Russell got snake bit on this hunt, but by the deer and not a snake. He was hunting with a longbow for the first time. He ordered it a year ago and received in this September. He is VP of Operations of a big independent moving company. He has been on BowhuntingTalk.com for two years and developed relationships with some other bowhunters and is a regular participant in the formu under the name ParkerMag (after his two dogs; Parker and Maggie). |
