October 18:

We now have a new group of bowhunters at the 4th Annual Bowhunting.net Bowhunt.

Last night 5 new bowhunters arrived for the 2nd leg of the Bowhunting.net 4th Annual Bowhunt. They are Tom Alford, Jim Driggs, Max Zanger Jr., Matt Swihart and Steven Gill. In addition to them Ricky Burnett and myself are still here.

Group 2:  Steven Gill, Matt Swihart, Ricky Burnett,  Jim Driggs, Max Zanger Jr., and Tom Alford.

Matt Swihart was the first bowhunter in from the afternoon hunt. Matt sat still and saw the same 8-point he saw this morning, it didn't come in until late and daylight was almost gone. The buck got within 20 yards and as it left Matt climbed down the ladderstand the young buck did not spook.

This morning Matt saw the same buck came in front of him three different times. It was a perfect 15 yard shot opportunity but the buck was too young. The buck has his first antlers and it is a very symmetrical 8-point rack. Matt is from San Marcos, Texas and builds homes for D.R. Horton and he is a superintendent.

Ricky Burnett is staying on to hunt a few more days. This afternoon things came together for him. This morning he saw 6 bucks and 3 does and the bucks were all chasing one of the does. It lasted for 40 minutes.

This afternoon Ricky noticed a fat buck behind his treestand. It walked over and bedded 30 yards to Ricky's left. The buck watched the area, checking for does, for 30 minutes. Then he stood up and went to the feeder. Ricky waited for 40 minutes to see if any other deer were showing up. The buck was a nice 10-point and Ricky decided to go for it. The buck turned quartering to the left and Ricky aimed for the vitals. The shot looked low and the buck tore out for 75 yards. It stopped and laid down but stood back up and took a few more steps. Ricky lost track of the buck.

When Billy Don arrived he put Tater on the trail and then had the buck in seconds. Rick's shot was a heart shot and the buck was where Ricky had last seen it. This is Ricky's second buck on a Bowhunting.net Bowhunt with Billy Don.

This morning Max Zanger Jr. saw an 8-point with a doe and fawn and 10 pigs, a Red Stag, another doe all before 7:30. Another doe and fawn and a 6 point. At 10:10 he saw a heavy horned, mature 7-point walking in a slow gait but the closest it got was 100 yards. Max is from Nacogdoches, Texas and is in real estate and renovates rental properties for his own business, Z&G Investments.

This afternoon Max saw a hog just before dark. Then two big does and a fawn came in less than 10 yards but Max could not see his sight pins.

Jim Driggs saw two does at 7:00 and 40 yards away. Then an 8-pointer came in behind him and Jim saw it working branches. Afterward it ate acorns. This morning two does and a fawn walked though. A nubbin buck came to the feeder in front of Jim and ate corn 20 yards away.

Tom Alford was on our hunt two years ago and is back this year. He saw two bomber bucks and a spike following a doe this morning. This afternoon ten pigs came in 15 minutes after Tom got in the ladderstand. Then 9 hogs showed up. Tom picked the largest one and when it turned broadside he took his shot. The hog ran and Tom saw and heard it crash in a brush pile.  Fifteen minutes later a third group of hogs came in. When they came to the place Tom had shot the hog these hogs spooked and left.

Steven Gill saw a black buck doe at 20 yards but couldn't get a shot. This afternoon 10 hogs were rooting around but not near enough. Then he saw 4 does at 75 yards. Steven is from Houston and is an executive for EPCO Inc. owned by Dan Duncan which is an oil natural gas and transportation company.
