October 16 & 17: AFTERNOON HUNT
Ricky Burnett was watching two does and two yearlings and saw another deer across the opening. He could see the big horns without his binoculars at 120 yrds. The buck approached and followed behind the does. With the south wind blowing Ricky was aftaid they would wind him They stopped on a trail and the big doe acted like she smelt where Ricky walked in to the treestand. She made a soft snort and walked away. The big buck followed. Ricky said, "The buck had 10 inch G-2"s and G-3's and was out past its ears. The horns were dark chocolate. You could tell that he was the boss of the woods right there." Later Ricky saw 3 hogs and two more bucks, one was chasing a doe. David Tague was on the stand for an hour when he saw a button buck come by 10 feet from the blind. Later he returned with two does. They were in range but David already had a doe. Twenty minutes and a tall 8-point came up but was just over 20 yards and out of range. It was spooky and jumped at every rustle of the leaves. Suddenly it flagged and ran. But it came back and walked within David's effective range of less thatn 20 yards. Since the buck was so spooky David aimed low anticipating he would jump the string. But he didn't and the arrow went under the buck. The buck ran and stopped a moment, blew, and went on his way. "He was a cool looking buck. Taller than the one I shot two years ago, he had 2 inch crab claws and was a mature buck. Tomorrow morning David and his dad George are leaving for their homes, THIS MORNING and Tuesday
On the way back to the lodge guide Terry told Ricky about seeing two Black Bucks fighting on the way to pick him up. When they got in the area they saw 2 Black Buck does and a buck. Ricky wanted one of the larger ones and they got out of the truck and kept brush between them and the buck as they followed him. The buck made a scrape and then began walking stiff legged with his ears back. They saw another larger, wide horned Black Buck and carefully stalked it. The buck bedded down. Ricky got to 60 yards and the buck got up and walked, he was not spooked. Ricky kept following and when they were 50 yards away they saw a doe downwind of them. It winded them and that alerted the buck. The buck ran after the doe. Yesterday Ricky saw a doe first thing. Eight hogs came later and they got in close to Ricky, he drew and took a shot. The arrow hit a limb. That was it for the morning. In the afternoon he saw two bucks chasing a doe. Then a mature 10 point and a 3 point came into view but never got closer than 60 yards. From 5:30 to dark he saw 6 different bucks and 14 does. The bucks were making scrapes and running does everywhere. But nothing got within bow range. At last light 6 hogs came in and scented him when they got down wind. George Tague just arrived
and he hunted a Double Bull and saw a very big Water Buffalo bull walk
by his blind at 15 yards. Yesterday he saw 9 deer, a high rack 6-point
and does. They were eating acorns in the woods. That afternoon he saw 4
hogs came in while he was getting in the blind. Then later a black boar
walked by at 5 yards and stopped. George put his arrow where it should
go and the hog dropped on the spot. Here is George and his son David with
George's black boar.
Yesterday morning were in
a ladder stand and a decent 8-point chased a doe all around for and hour
and a half. The closest they got was 50 yards. As David got down the ladder
he saw a monster 8-point walking along a tree line toward the stand. David
stalked slowly into the buck's area and got within 40 yards and there was
no more cover between him and the buck. David stopped so he wouldn't shoot
the buck.
