Jay Liechty - Grim Reaper Broadheads
In 1995 mechanicals caught on in the market and soon Jay decided to go into business. He started the business in 2000 with a broadhead that was unique in the market. The tip was further forward then the others and it made sure the broadhead cut into the animal before the blades began to open. The broadhead did not use an O-ring. And...
A new development for broadheads is Max-Edge SS for Maximum Strength and Sharpness. Jay owns many patents for broadheads and broadhead making processes. Jay showed a video of their 30 second TV commercial. The commercial has a brief clip of recent tests with Ballistic Gelatin and the Grim Reaper out penetrates the fixed blade broadhead. Jay discussed the tests. They used dozens of broadheads that were shot into Ballistic Gelatin. The bow was a 55 pound Bear Code shot out of a Hooter Shooter shooting machine. They also shot into plywood at different angles to test steep angle shots. Plus they shot into steel barrels with a camera inside the barrels. The results were surprising.
Some issues for mechanical broadheads were: How Fast Do The Blades Deploy? How far does the broadhead have to penetrate until the blades are completely open. What happens when the broadhead goes though bone, do they deflect? Grim Reaper's focus is to gives a larger total cut area with the same kinetic energy that is takes to pass through a mature deer. The tests results reviled new, important facts about the initial shock of the mechanicals, ferrule design, number of blades, the hardness factor of the steel for the blades, a comparison of different angles when the blades are open and cutting, and much more. As the president and inventor, designer and founder of Grim Reaper Broadheads Jay's goal is to "make the best, most lethal and humane killing broadheads." They are made in the USA in Utah. Jay began the business because he had developed a broadhead that solved a lot of the problems with the mechanical broadheads of the time. Jay told me, "Ironically, having a hunting business cuts into your hunting. The busy season is during the hunting season. But with good employees and time management practices I can still enjoy the sport (bowhunting)." Alan
Ainsworth - Monticello Drug Company
Alan Ainsworth is Vice President of Sales & Distribution for Monticello Drug Company, Inc. in Jacksonville, Florida. The company sells over the counter pharmaceuticals and have a range of health related products. The company began in 1908 and is well established in their field.
Al introduced Monticello's scent eliminator product for the hunting field, NULLO, an Internal Deodorant. It has been around since 1947 and originally was an effective cure for bad breath. The FDA's comprehensive testing produced reports that it had active ingredients that it significantly reduced odor related to "fecal incontinence, colonstoymy and ileoostomy" and it had no negative side effects. Today, Nullo is invaluable in the medical field for incontinent and colostotomy patients. It has been proven by retirement home to greatly reduce or eliminate odors in elderly patients, even those with offensive odor control problems. Because odors are a major concern of hunters Nullo takes on the problem of scent suppression from a whole new angle. The active ingredient "cholorophyllin cooper complex neutralizes the odor causing bacteria in the body". It also "aids in cases of urinary odor, bad breath, foot odor, underarm odor and body sweat". The product uses a special form of chlorophyll from leaves from a particular mulberry tree in China, it is the world's purest chlorophyl. Alan said, "Nullo helps cut your scent from the inside out. Cleaning of your hunting clothes and underwear is also important. Sweat in clothes can be neutralized. After 3 days bacteria will start to grow on its own again and body odor will return to the clothes, 3 days is all it takes to reform. Therefore it is good to wash your clothes every 3 days to actually keep them odor free." There are testimonials of all different types on the effectiveness of Nullo on the web site www.nullo.com. Al
passed out Nullo to everyone for their personal use while bowhunting. Recommended
dosage is 2 tablets, one in the morning and one at night. It takes 3 to
4 days to neutralize the odor causing bacteria in the stomach and digestive
tract. At the same time Nullo also enters the blood stream and that is
where underarm odor, mouth odor and other body odors are neutralized. Continue
using throughout the hunting season. When you are done hunting Nullo is
water soluble and will flush out of your system in 24 hours.
Eastman Outdoors - Dana Brackins Dana began by introducing the Carbon Express line of arrows. The new Weight Forward arrow technology was developed and patented by Carbon Express and introduced in 2005 in the Maxima arrows. It distributes the weight of the arrow differently from previous arrow designs. It is caled "Wheight Forward" and is the hottest new thing in arrow design. In 2007 it will be applied to other shafts too. Also there is new are aluminum arrows for the Archery In Schools program. In NANO-XR High Precision carbon arrow. It is a flatter shooting down range technology. It reduces wind and side drag and was tested by Olympic teams and results were positive. The speed was faster, wind drag was less, and accuracy was improved. Also a Maxima 3-D Select line has been added to replace the former 3-D Select arrow line. Dana
stood on a Maxima arrow with it at a 45 degree angle and it was ok. Here
is a pic of this.
Dana
also showed us Gorilla Treestands.
New for 2007 is a coating that is named
Silent-Tech a coating that
has been engineered to quieten the parts of the treestands.
We saw a Slow Cooker that was camouflage. The line also has sausage makers, seasonings, a cuber, turkey cooking -- anything that is needed for processing and cooking wild game. He brought out a new turkey hunting blind called the Undertaker.
The Undertaker is for shotgun hunters and will work well for turkeys, ducks and geese. It can be used by bowhunters.
Dana
showed us two more new Gorilla ground blinds. One was a blind in ASAT camouflage.
The other is named the "360".
The 360 has a total visibility form the inside and black panels come with the blind to be put up behind the hunter and eliminate the hunter's outline.
Dana
Brackins - Interview
Dana became Pro Staff Director and is in charge of 200 pro staffers. Dana is a hands on type and gets out with the pro staff. He is always looking for good people people that are respected in their home areas. They will get the word out about Carbon Express arrows. Since Dana took over the Pro Staff program has become international. "Our pro staff lives and breathes archery and are loyal to me and our arrows" Dana's specialty is the Carbon Express arrows but his position includes attending the trade shows, talks to archery dealers and introduces and educates people to Eastman's new products at events. Carbon Express was an early pioneer for carbon arrows. Originally the arrows were made in New Mexico but when Eastman created the Buff Tuff technology they moved the arrow production to Korea where the quantity and high quality could be produced. Since changing to Korea more arrows, of higher quality are being made. Dana said, "The plant in Korea is so clean it is unbelievable. It is as clean and as sterile as any hospital I have ever been in." Eastman Outdoors is a parent company of Eastman Outfitters. Gorilla Treestands Inc. is a separate company. Carbon Express is a branded arrow manufactured by Eastman Outfitters. The companies share resources and therefore Dana works in close association with all of them in the development as well as marketing of new products. Dana Brackins "lives, eats
and breaths bowhunting". He started shooting competitive archery to become
a better bowhunter. He has bow bagged moose, caribou, elk, american bison,
javelina, whitetail, wild boar, coyote, wild turkey, black bear. His favorite
is the moose in Canada. He lives on the Michigan, Indiana border.
DAY ONE The first thing on the agenda on Day One was the meetings with the companies who made this hunt possible. Wade Nolan opened the meeting and then introduced Mike Jordan of ATSKO. Mike Jordan -
ATSKO
Mike Jordan is a bowhunter, he insists that his products work for hunters. Mike showed us his new product "N-O-Dor Odor Oxidizer ". It destroys all odors on skin, hair, clothing, mouth, footwear and gear. It is the only scent eliminator that you can spray on your skin and even in your mouth. Mike said to spray your boots and legs of your pants. Spray your gloves when you start to the stand and before you climb up to the stand.
These are not baking soda products. Many scent eliminator products ingrediants include baking soda. Baking soda draws odor but it releases it when it contacts moisture (water). Mike told us, "If you leave nothing on your body deer can not smell you. N-O-Dor Oxidizer and Powder do not leave a residue." It takes you 8 hours to build up bacteria on your body if you start totally clean. SOAPS: If you wash your clothes in a brand name detergent they will gain weight, up to 2%, after they dry. This is because the detergent leaves a residue in the clothing. The detergent, even if it has no scent, leaves 17 millimeters of residue in the clothes. Also, detergents have color brightness that increase UIV in the fabric. SPORT WASH - was developed for the hunting industry and crossed over into the medical industry because it rinsed 100% and eliminated allergic reaction and irratation cauysed by the residue in name brand detergents. Sport-Wash is a special formula that goes into the fibers and is lifted out in rinsing. It leaves no residue. One ounce is all you need to clean a large load of your clothing. And fabric softeners are never necessary. Sport Wash contains no UV. UV - We have a UV filter in our eyes. Deer do not. At a deer's peak of vision they see UV. If your clothing has UV brighteners, either added by the manufacturer or from washing in detergent, deer will see it as a bright blue glow. A deer can distinguish different odors. If you use a cover scent that other hunters have frequently used in that area then deer will learn that scent and associate it with hunters. UV-KILLER - is a spray that eliminates UV glow and is perminant. Mike demonstrated UV with various garments and archery gear using a light with a wave length of 380 nanometers. It is the only way to create how deer see.
In the 50's detergent makers began adding UV brighteners to their products that reflect light up into a spectrum where the washed clothes look whiter and with brighter colors. Dry cleaning can be ok if they use the right type of drying process, non odorless quickdry. We have a UV filter in our eye because we are active during the daytime. Deer are noctournal and do not have the UV filter. Mike gave us the url www.vischeck.com -- a web site to see pictures as color blind animals or people see them. Afterwards I interviewed Mike Jordon and here is the interview. Mike Jordan -
ATSKO - INTERVIEW
Mike's passion for hunting gave him insight into projects for the company. Atsko is a unique company. The people who work there stay because the working environment is All the Atsko/Sno-Seal product are formulated and manufactured in house and Sno-Seal was introduced to the market in 1933. Even today Atsko formulates all their own products and manufacturers it as well. When Mike joined Atsko they had the Sport-Wash product. It had taken 2 years to get the formula so it completely washes away all odors and leaves no residue in the fabric. When it was introduced in the hunting market it was "a success from day one." Sport-Wash is readily available around the word. It has been successful in the medical market where it is know as Sensi-Clean. A new product Permanent Water Guard will bead and repel water for 25 washings. Water Guard Extreme is a brand new product that has UV and Mildew protection in the formula. When it spray on tents and outdoor gear the equipment will not rot from sun damage or mildew. Mike has bowhunted for 29 years. He got interested while in the military and it added a whole new dimension to his hunting. He was a late convert to the compound bow when he switched over 7 years ago. Mike said, "I have enjoyed 98% of the people I have met in the hunting industry. The people I met and meet in hunting camps are considerate and good people. I am concerned about the future of hunting. The availability of land to hunt. The monetary investment that has to be put out for hunting is more than a young family can afford and that inhibits involving kids. We need the kids. I am a hunter education instructor in South Carolina as well as lending support to Women In The Outdoors." "Any time you take an animal with a bow and you consciously made the decision to take it, regardless of how large it is, that animal is a trophy." "The thrill of hunting, whether you get it or your buddy gets it, that's part of hunting. You remember your misses or close calls more vividly than the ones you actually got." "Find out where clubs and knowledgeable people are. All the books in the world won''t prepare you to hunt. You have to have a mentor. Find a bowhunter, even as a rifle hunter the bowhunter will show you more about the animal and the hunt. And enjoy your time hunting. I don't care if you see a buck or a doe. Watch the animals wake up in the morning. Enjoy it." 2006 Bowhunting.net Deer Hunt Sponsors
