Lon Lauber Joe Bell C. J. Winand Rick Combs

Lon Lauber
Lon has been bowhunter for 27 years and a free lance photographer and outdoor writer for 21 years. As a kid he grew up shooting a recurve bow with his dad and older brother. He rifle hunted for a few years in Washington state. But when he was in college in upstate New York he bagged a doe at 18 yards with a compound bow he had purchased while in the Navy and it hooked Lon on bowhunting.

Lon was a Navy photographer and photo jourllnist and did top secret photography, crime scene photography, portraits, news photos and much more. During his stint in the Navy he studied at Syracuse University in upstate New York. He first sold his photography when stationed in Adak in the Aleutian Islands. He took pics of bald eagles and sea otters and sold prints to individuals and then moved on to outdoor magazines. It grew and now Lon has 3 agents that sell his photography around the world. His library has 110,000 slides and 8,000 digital images of wildlife, nature and hunters in the field.

After the Navy Lon continued photographing wildlife and people and things from his hunts.

He has 44 official P&Y class animals in the book with two more that haven't been entered. He lived in Alaska 17 years and was a 9 time Alaska state archery champion and bowhunter all the Alaska big game. Bowhunter's Guide To Accurate Shooting is Lon's book. (Email Lon for info on his book at lelauber@yahoo.com)

"This book is about choosing, setting up and using archery tackle in a hunting scenario, Lon said. "Anybody can learn to shoot will in their back yard. But it is a whole different thing when you run up a hill and take a shot at an elk. Or hanging around a tree and shooting from a treestand. Lon recommends practicing at long distances of 50 to 80 yards. When you can group well at those distances it boosts your confidence for your 20 yard shot at a deer."

"Lots of people choose the wrong equipment to bowhunt with. For example, many people get caught up in speed. And with a shorter brace height bow, with a lighter arrow, with more draw weight, it actually decreases their accuracy in a hunting situation. I think shooting a higher brace height, less draw weight , heavier arrow -- just the opposite of what makes a speed bow -- and control it in a hunting situation, it will serve them better"

Lon travels to several states every year and hunts over 150 days of the year.

Lon told me, "I like to hunt and shoot pictures. When I'm not bowhunting I am bird hunting with my dog."

C. J. Winand
C. J. currently lives in Maryland.  He writes the popular "Hunting Whitetail" column for Bowhunter magazine (the last 10 years).

He is on the Board of Directors for the National Bowhunter Education Foundation and the National Promotional Director for FHFH (Farmers and Hunters Feeding the Hungry). "One deer equates to 200 meals to the homeless. It is simple to get food to them. The hunter takes the harvest to a licensed FHFH butcher and charity organizations pick it up from them., C.J. said, "The most valued commodity at a food bank is meat, meat, and meat. The high protein, low cholesterol is ideal to homeless shelters. Collectively, FHFH has paid for and distributed over 1,800 tons of wild game to the homeless nationwide. Last year they took down 13 tons of venison to the Katrina survivors. If we are going to promote and sustain hunting as we know it today supporting and developing FHFH chapters is a key. Many people may not support hunting but they surely support feeding the hungry. In my home state of Maryland one dollar of every hunting license goes to the Maryland chapter of FHFH. This is an example of accruing funds that I am using nationwide to challenge other states to get involved. Additionally, I am currently trying to obtain funds from re-authorization of the 2007 Farm Bill where federal funds would match state funds for any wild game donations for the hungry."

C.J. is a wildlife biologist with a degree of Wildlife Management from Texas A&M. During the spring of the year he does deer seminars all over the country at sporting events and sport shows. He explains, "What I basically do is take biological papers and put them in an easy to understand format for the hunters. For example, human urine in scrapes was found to have no negative impact on deer visitation rates at scrapes."

He continued, "I also do sportsmens dinners, sometimes called "beast feasts", at churches. with the goal of bringing unchurched men to Christ."

Every year he creates quality whitetail deer management plans for various hunting properties. This entails harvest structure, population census (infra-red camera) and food plot creation.

C.J. told me, "Food and cover are the basic ingredients of special distribution of the deer heard. To increase age structure and health of the herd feeding programs or food plots are the key. Whether you grow it or throw it makes no difference to the deer. They eat a minimum of 3/4 of a ton of vegetation per year. As a wildlife manager maintaining an 11 percent protein level is critical for any deer management plan. The highest protein value of corn is 8% whereas planted food plots are 20 to 30%. This is important because deer could die from undernourishment with a full belly of corn. Deer have to have a daily minimum of eleven percent protein to survive."

"We have failed as biologist and hunters to educate the non hunting public to deer management. Nationwide we kill one deer per minute, every single minute, on our highways and roads. This results in billions of dollars of damages to vehicles and injuries. Data reveals that a minimum of 200 individuals are killed each year on deer vehicle related accidents (DVA). But many more are unreported. On average, the latest insurance figures show that $2,800 per DVA and a million deer die on the highways every year."

C.J. has been a bowhunter for 30 years. "When I bowhunt I am closer to God than any time in my day," he said. "Bowhunting provides solitude, peace and a sense of independence that no other activity provides."

Joe Bell
Joe Bell is the Editor of Bow and Arrow Hunting magazine, a title of APG Action PUrsuit Group owned by Apprise Media. Bow and Arrow magazine has one of the highest renewal rates of the bowhunting magazines.

Joe has been with them for 8 years. Prior to that Joe was Associate Editor for Petersen's Bowhunting and Peterson's Hunting. Ever since he was in his teens Joe wanted to be an outdoor writer. He attended Cal State Long Beach in California and got his degree in Communications, specific to Magazine Journalism. He took a job with Kaiser Permanente as the Editor/Publisher of their company newsletter.

Joe had his eye on Petersen's Publishing (30 miles from his home) and sent his resume several times. One day they phoned him to apply for the position of Associate Editor for Petersen's Outdoor Group and he interviewed with the various magazine titles. Greg Tinsley, the Editor of Petersen's Hunting, hired Joe to work for that magazine.

Joe told me, "I stepped right into my dream job. It was almost unbelievable. My boyhood became a reality."

In a year Joe moved over to Petersen's Bowhunting and remained in that position for a year and a half. A better opportunity came along at that point and Joe moved to Bow and Arrow Hunting magazine as Editor. At Bow and Arrow Joe has worked to upgrade the magazine. Today's Bow and Arrow is more informative, more graphically appealing and more balanced between how-to articles, equipment related articles and general hunting stories. These days Joe hunts more but in order to leave the office he has to work ahead to make the hunting happen.

Joe's' strongest hunting interests include experimenting with archery tackle and bowhunting out West. His favorite game to pursue are Mule Deer, Blacktail Deer and Elk. He began hunting with guns at a young age. He was enthralled with guns and everything about them. He knew the specifics of rifle cartridges and ballistic capabilities. At 12 years old Joe hand loaded and was rifle hunting predators and big game.

One day, while reading a Boy's Life magazine, an article by Fred Bear about bowhunting caught his attention. Joe had to try it and he asked his parents for a Bow and Arrow set. He practiced daily with his 25 pound recurve. When he was 13 Joe saved up enough money and bought a fully equipped Pro-Line bow from an archery pro shop. He shot in tournaments in preparation for hunting Southern California deer and exotics. He cut his teeth at 14 by hunting Santa Curiz island and shot his first wild hog there.

As the years followed he hunted there and Catalina regularly. That was how it all started for Joe Bell. His passion for bowhunting replaced his interest in gun hunting. Joe has bowhunted throughout the USA, Canada and New Zealand and taken 12 of the North American big game animals, to include Black Bear, Mule Deer, Canadian Moose, 4 types of Caribou, Blacktail, Sitka deer, Whitetail, Elk and Antelope.
