Southern
Illinois has a history of producing record class bucks as big as any where
in the mid west. There is a diversity in hunting here that is not found
in other parts of the state. Because of the topography and the river systems
there are large timbered areas in conjuntion with aggruculture crops. Many
farms in the area have been put in the CRP (Conservation Reserve Program)
and that creates additional areas of deer habitat and cover.
I talked to Doug
Doty and Greg Griffith about Dream Woods Adventrues:
"We set up overlooking funnel and travel areas where the terrain charcteristics create deer movement near the treestands. " "The weather looks super this year. The farmers had record harvests so the deer are in absulutely the best condition they could be in, which relates to better antler growth and body weight. We have already seen giant bucks so we know our hunters will have shot opportunities at great bucks." "Next week we have a group of 5 traditional bowhunters who have bowhunted together all over the US, as well as in Canada Alaska and Africa. Then our rut hunts start and we are looking forward to some impressive trophy bucks being taken then. On November 1oth we have another Writers Camp bowhunt that is during the final days of the rut. The weather here is milder in terms of snow and severe cold weather. The weather herre is easier on our deer hunters and puts less stress on the deer herd." "Many Illinois hunters complain that the operations they hunt had crowded lodging and the hunting sites were over used and over hunted. We guarantee that will not happen. We assure our hunters that we will not overbook our capacity for lodging or hunting. activity." "On
farms that do not have crops we plant food plots to attract deer. In areas
that have food crops we hunt small parcels of hard woods adjacent to the
crops. The variety of land in Southen Illinois gives us hunting options
that are not possible in strictly farm land areas of the state. We use
treestands, however we do have pop up ground blinds and areas where someone
can set their own blind situation up."
