JANUARY 2007

January 2 - Part #2, Hunt Comments & A Pic
January 2 Part #1, Elimitrax Where Art Thou? | Part #2: Rocket Lift Off  | Hen & Me | Part #3: Look, Up In The Sky | The Search |

Here is my soon to be wild turkey Hen Decoy thanks to our Taxidermy Columnist Larry Reese of Wildlife Artistry Taxidermy

What a truly colorful and beautiful bird the wild turkey hen is. Look at that fan and the full wings. It was surely my morning. And it is very cool that this hen will get to go with me on many future

EQUIPMENT COMMENTS:

What you want for your bowhunts is for everything to work together. And using hunting and archery gear that fits you gives you confidence that you can make it happen.

The broadhead is the item that has to do the most important job, fly where you are aiming, penetrate deeply and make a cut that results in a quick humane kill. The Grim Reaper RazorTip does just that. Because I had to shoot through the mesh of the blind I opened the blade so the mesh wouldn't affect the arrow flight like it can on a closed expandable head. The RazorTip cut through the mesh and this wild turkey -- and went 15 yards further than the 20 yards the turkey ran. Grim Reaper has a new slogan, "Watch 'Em Drop", meaning they expire within sight, and that definitely happened this morning.

No bow I have ever hunted with shoots as flat for so far, and hits so hard, as this Tribute from BowTech Archery. The shot was close, probably 10 to 12 yards. Truthfully, I could not even see my arrow on the way to the turkey, but I heard it hit and knew it was right on target. I selected the BowTech Tribute with the Smooth module cam instead of the Speed module because it fits my bowhunting style, I like smooth, quiet draws. Set at 64 pounds the Tribute is the greatest bowhunting bow this bowhunter has ever hunted with.

I used Jim Fletcher Archery's string loop release, the Flathead. As always it made a smooth, flawless release. I have every confidence in the Flathead and Jim Fletcher. There is a magic about hooking a release on the string. It means it is all coming down ... right now. You do not want anything to mess up your shot opportunity. And with a Jim Fletcher release you can know that your arrow will go where you are aiming.

The Grim Reaper broadheads were on MAXIMA shafts from Carbon Express. They are accurate, fast flying arrows from the biggest producer of carbon arrows. I fletched my arrows with the easy to use, fast fletching carbon fletcher from Arizona Rim E-Z Fletch (it applies 3 feathers at a time) with east to apply, colorful EZY-Eye yellow wraps fletched with bright yellow feathers from the leaders of archery fletching and feather makers Gateway Feathers. I like feathers, nothing looks as good and nothing flies better or as quietly.

WOODHAVEN Custom Calls are a new breed of turkey calls and the top champion callers are part of the Woodhaven team. I used the Billy Yargus mouth call and it got the curiosity up on the 4 hens that came up to hang out with me on the ridge.

This season I have a new NIKON   binocular, the 10x50 Action EX Extreme. They are lightweight and just the right size for my use. Not to big or not too little. The smaller binoculars have been disappointments to me. The lenses give an extremely clear, distortion-free image over the entire field of view. They cost a little more but they are well worth it. The rangefinder is the Team Realtree Laser800 and I like it because it is small enough to use with my right hand while I have the bow in the left. It measures in half yard increments. Just put the crosshairs on something and click so see how far it is. And it works in very low light conditions so you can verify the distances around your stand before hunting tine.

I.D.I. Gear incorporates a new insulation called insultex™. Their advertising claims it is "the lightest and thinnest thermal insulation ever" -- and I am here to tell you that it is just that. When you first handle an I.D.I. Gear garments you will think, "This is very thin, does it really keep you warm in cold weather." Well, it does -- by reflecting the body's radiant heat back to the body with a new technology. Plus it is lightweight, waterproof, windproof and buoyant. It is the severe weather ticket.

No doubt about it, the Double Bull MATRIX is a wild turkey hunting unit. The ground blind goes up fast. It is quiet. Inside the wall's are black and and if you wear dark clothing you are invisible. Their web site says, "Eye Level Hunting Excitement" and by golly it is just that.

This season I got some WOLVERINE rubber boots with 1,000 gram Thinsulate insulation. I figured they would work all except the cold days. But I was wrong! Instead they did me just right in all of this Fall's weather conditions, the days in the low 20's included.

Getting the bowsight on the target fast was important as the turkeys passed by. The Spot-Hogg Real Deal bowsight has the bright fiber optics that I needed to get on target and get an arrow in route before they walked out of range. I especially like the round sight bar, it fits perfectly  in my Venom Peep Sight picture and this has helped my accuracy.

Sticks N' Limbs camouflage is what I'm wearing in the picture. Inside the blind I wore the I.D.I. Gear with a black fleece jacket so I would blend in with the darkness inside the blind. But when I'm not in a blind I wear Sticks N' Limbs because it works in every kind of hunting country. Its design of tree limbs uses an optical trick that breaks up your outline, regardless of your surroundings. It is the best camouflage there is. And I designed the pattern myself. You can get it at BowhuntingStore.com.
