At Home - 2006
JANUARY 2007 January 1
A quick look through last night's pictures told this story. Bucks are still testing each
other. Even young ones. These two bucks eye each other in front of the
BuckEye Cam.
First and foremost, Wide-8 is still around. Second, the bucks are being aggressive and they are running solo. Believe me, they are all still looking for any un-breed does. And there still are a few does left to breed -- ones that didn't take on the first go round and early born fawns that come into estrus for the first time during December and January. Third, seeing a good number of does indicates that most of them have been bread and they are grouping back up and getting back to normal doe activities. To The Morning Hunt... After I drank some coffee, scarfed down a few pop tarts and took a shower, and got dressed I checked the BuckEye Cam pics. Some were being received right now. That meant that I couldn't hunt the Food Plot. There was no way I can sneak out there and not spook the deer. But I can get in my truck and drive off to another place. So I changed my plan and returned to Ol' #7. My truck's thermometer showed 28 degrees. I heard wild turkeys come off the roost and they were in the nearby woods but I didn't see any. Didn't see any deer either. So I broke down the blind, loaded it up and took it back to the Ridge. There were 4 does there, looking at me come into view. They were eating lush, new green oats that just came up. I had broadcast them weeks ago and figured they were long gone. The does trotted off and I put the Double Bull Matrix blind up. When I came in from the morning
hunt I checked my computer and the BuckEye Cam had pictures. Several does
passed in front of the camera as well as three of the young bucks. This
means that deer are in the plot during daylight hours .... finally.
I made myself a crummy snack for dinner, updated the web site, and went to sleep at 8:30.
