Part
8: Finding The Last Hay Barn
The Search For Wide 8 Back Again My picture file read 5:02
as I took the Wide 8's picture for the second time. He walked out of the
trees and I picked up my camera and took this picture.
He walked across in front
of me, the closest 880 reading was 61 yards. Once again he was not in a
hurry and ambled by at a leisurely pace. Later I saw 4 does through the
open East end of the hay barn, they were traveling South to North. But
even if they would have walked by me at 10 yards I would not have shot
one here. I do not want to put any scent or sign in the area the Wide 8
and Big Boy 10 bucks are using. And tracking and dragging out a deer would
surely do that
Immediately after the next morning's uneventful hunt I put my big Cube target in my front yard and measured 33 yards with the Nikon 880. Then I measured and marked shooting spots for 35 and 40 yards. Instead of driving shooting stakes in the ground to mark the yardages I used the tried and true method of raking a line on the ground with my boot. First, what I wanted to know was ... where my arrow would have gone if I had shot at Wide 8 when I had a clear broadside, standing still view of him at 33 yards. I drew and put my pin on the bulls eye of the Cube target and then raised it half way between the top and the bulls eye. And released. Right in the bull. Then I shot at 35 yards and again split the difference from the bull to the top of the target . Right in the bull. At 40 yards I held just under the top of the target. Whop! Slightly to the left of the bull. Then I practiced for an hour. When I was done I was confident I could make the shot if I was lucky enough for Wide 8 or Big Boy 10 to walk by closer than 40 yards. My original intention was to add a second pin to my sight. In fact I already had the pin with me and the allen wrench to adjust it. But with the combination of the rangefinder and the flat shooting of my bow (BowTech Tribute) I decided not to add the additional pin. I believe in giving credit
where it is due and it definitely is due. I have to say something here
about my bow and setup. The Tribute for BowTech Archery (www.BowTechArchery.com)
is the powerhouse that is making my setup work. Never, ever, have I shot
a bow that shoot so flat I could hit at 40 yards with my top pin. But the
Tribute does. And I'm only shooting 64 pounds too.
this bow can really go! And the credit for helping put the arrow out there so it arrives on course goes to the FlatHead string loop release from Jim Fletcher Archery. the bowhunter's peep the Venom Peep Sight, the bright green pin on the Real Deal from Spot-Hogg, Gold Tip camo arrows, a Trophy Taker drop down arrowrest and a Stirng Loop. Plus a special thanks to Roger Peacock of PeacockArchery.com for setting the bow and accessories up to get the smooth, maximum performance from it. CONTINUED: The Search For Wide-8
