Finding Wide 8

NEXT DAY
I was in my half tin blind at 2:00 in the afternoon. Besides my bow I brought my backpack. In it was my laptop. I figured I could get in a little work while I waited for deer to show up.

I balanced my camera on my backpack and took my own pic with the time delay. I figure this is the ultimate portable office.

Tin and hay stacked around and on a Double Bull Matrix ground blind. Kind of a mess, huh. Yea. Just the way I like it. And so far the deer are not paying attention to it.

When 4:30 came I had a couple of things to do to wind up my laptop session. Minutes later I made one of my frequent looks around the area to see if anything was going on.

Walking through the trees seventy yards away were the legs of a deer. And a glimpse of antlers! A buck. And he was moving east. East is good, because I'm east.

The buck walked into and across a small opening 50 yards from me. I recognized him from his CamTrakker and BuckEye Cam pictures, it was the Wide-8 buck.

Leisurely, he continued my and I put my laptop on the ground and got my bow in my hand. When the buck got right in front of me he stopped behind some small trees. He pawed the ground and mouthed some overhead limbs.

He continued messing with the ground and limbs. I eased my rangefinder out of my right pocket, put it to my eye and clicked the go button. The crosshairs came up and I put it on the buck. The display read 33 yards. (Picture this, I've got my bow in my left hand and the rangefinder in the right. This Nikon 880 rangefinder is sure the ticket for bowhunting. )

Wide-8 was further than I wanted to shoot and it looked like he intended to stay a few minutes more. I decided to try for a picture.

According to the date on the picture file I took this picture at 4:42.

I punched the zoom mode on the Sony and took another pic.

Believe me, I wanted to take more pictures but I couldn't risk it. If there ever was one it was BowTech time, right now. He stepped forward and stopped again. I picked up the range finder and once again it read 33 yards.

He took a few steps and stopped briefly at a place where the fence was down.

I knew if I missed him he would never be back.

Wide-8 stepped across the downed fence and walked toward the trees where I had found the scrape. I hadn't noticed another buck coming up the north south fence. It fell in behind Wide-8 and followed at a 40 yard distance.

My watch made a soft beep at 6:00 and I counted to 100 and eased out of the barn.

I found him !!!
