Part 3: Finding The Last Hay Barn
Part 1 | Part 2 | Part 3 | Part 4 | Part 5 | Part 6 |

A Bold Move
The next day I hunted the Last Hay Barn in the morning and afternoon. I zipped in the morning. During the afternoon hunt when the sun was low in the West and lighting up the ground and shining into the trees I saw a deer 80 yards away. It stopped briefly and looked the opposite way. It had a wide rack but I couldn't tell about the length of the tines or how many. When the buck moved It got lost in the brush and left me wondering if it was one of the bucks I knew about or another one. Later a buck with broken tines and a broken off main beam walked through in front of me, right where I wanted them to be. But I couldn't see him coming.

My setup had an issue. The blind was so far back in the hay barn there was no peripheral vision. I needed to get the blind further forward and that was a problem, it would put the blind out of the barn and increase its visibility. I was sure that wouldn't work.

I discussed this with my buddy Robbie Cramer and he had an idea. We went to the hay barn and with tin snips and a pitch fork and cleared out a hole in the hay that the Matrix would fit inside. I placed the blind half in and half out of the barn's door opening while Robbie stacked bales of the barn's hay around the blind. Then we laid rusty old tin sheets around the hay. To finish we laid two tin sheets over the top of the blind and duct taped the ends to the door on the right.

It looks like this.

An old stock chute goes out to the barn and one side of it is slim cedar posts. It makes a hidden runway for me to get to and from the blind.

AFTERNOON HUNT
That afternoon I hunted here from 3:00 until dark. The broken horn 8-point and a young 8-point walked by in front of me. They did not pay any attention to the pile of tin and hay that hid the Double Bull, my swivel chair, and me and my BowTech.

I had me a nice new buck spot all right.
