At Home - 2006
Bryant Askew Gets His First Buck My friend John Askew arrived at 5:30 in the AM on Wednesday. We drank a quick cup of coffee and went hunting. John hunted the Back 200 and saw a nice 8-point in the thick cedars. When the buck came up in front of John he decided to leave this buck for next year. Later a 6-point came through the area. When John made the drive back to my house he saw a dozen deer. They were on the move later than usual. Mid afternoon John's son Bryant arrived with Dewayne Woolsey and James Walker the two fireman who Bryant works with. When they were here before they both got a wild turkey. Dewayne and James returned to the river and put up a pop up ground blind. Sometimes the wild turkey flocks come to this area to fly up to roost. But no wild turkeys passed near their blind. Instead they flew from the ridge out into the big, adjacent coastal field cow pasture and congregated before going further up the river to roost. In the morning the firemen saw several dozen wild turkeys. Some hens came in range but they wanted a gobbler. (Hens are legal game this fall.) John saw more deer but didn't get a shot opportunity. He left after lunch on Thursday. Only a few deer and turkey sightings were made during the afternoon hunts for Bryant, Dewayne and James. I wasn't able to hunt in the morning and at 9:15 I drove to the hunting lease's camp. Bryant was there. Do you want to take pictures of my buck?, he asked.
Bryant waited in a ladder stand. Around 8:30 he noticed a buck on the brushy hill on the opposite side of the old road. It was an 8-point and it worked its way slowly down the hill and walked into the road ... broadside ... and in the clear. Bryant began to draw his bow and half way into it the buck looked right at him. These days Bryant lifts weights and I'd put money on him being able to hold his bow at mid draw longer than most of us. But when his oomph was gone he knew he had to let down. Or pull it back. He did what I would have done. Pulled it back and sorted it all out at full draw. The buck looked even more interested and watched, stone still. With the bow finally broke over Bryant was able to hold longer. The buck held fast. Bryant needed to move his bow to get his pin on him before he gave out. He made his move and the buck moved too. But not enough. The arrow hit and Bryant saw red blood squirting from the buck. It quickly moved 30 yards and laid down. Immediately Bryan got down and took a few steps toward the buck. He didn't know if he needed to or not, but to be sure, he took another shot. It was over. It was Bryant's first buck.
