December 22
MORNING:
My Atomic Clock LCD showed
the outdoor temperature at 29 as I left for the Ridge. Wild turkeys lit
up the air waves from their toosts at turkey talking time. A loud hen dominated
the turkey voices and a group of gobblers further to the east sounded off
over and over. Their were a bunch of turkeys
Coyotes also cranked up and
raised a big racket off to the north west. They made me a little qantsy
but they were in the opposite direction my deer had gone yesterdcday, so
I wasn't concerned.
After flydown, the turkey
vocalizations got closer and closer. Suddenly they all shut up, it sounded
like they were down hill from my ground blind. At 7:34 some hens walked
out from behind a cedar 14 yards south of my Marrix blind.
Wild turkeys fluff their
feathers or spread their wings and shake them as they go about their turkey
buskness of the day. Usually they are done by the time I get my camera
on them. However, this turkey was more lucky than that and got its picture
on bowhunting.net. Shake it up baby.
More followed, mostly hens
but a few were very juvinile looking jakes.
The leaders hooked a right
and in the hallway-like opening )that my blind is on the edge of) and led
the small flock away.
A few minutes after the
flock dissapeared a lone jake walked out. It was more developed and had
a small tuft of a beard.
When 9:00 came I steped
out of the Double Bull to go get my deer. I found where it had gone down
but that was the end of the sign. I continued in the southernly direction
it was runing/ In 35 yards I was at the edge of a deep gorge. I went down
the side and looked everywhere. My search along the river was also fruitless.
In most cases, when you loose
a blood trail the animal changed directions. I went to work on that angle
poked along looking under the cedars into the brush. A low flying buzzard
caught my attention uphill to the north west. The buzzard folded up and
dropped like a kite to the ground.
I hurried there. It was too
late. Buzzards flew up when I got close. But judging from the looks of
things the coyotes had been there first. It was unpleasant looking. I took
a picture of a buzzard that boldly watched me from the limbs of a dead
tree.
That afternoon I went to
the Point and as I walked up to the Double Bull I heard wild turkey noises.
They were in the woods to the west and coming my way. I tried to get in
the blind before they saw me but I didn't and they turned tail.
Beweeen 4 and 5 the coyotes
were back at it. Two young bucks came through the area on the opposite
side of the fence.
