December 9 - Freezing Morning

The frost covered ground and set the stage for the cold 12 degree temperature. I was glad my Double Bull blind cut the wind. I had spooked an unseen deer walking out to it and as the deer snorted at me I wondered if I would see anything because of it.

Daylight trickled in and a doe family walked by.

Two does came from the opposite direction and one of them found something to browse on.

A buck with a missing antler walked out of the tall, dried grass. I guess he broke the main beam on his other antler.

A young sixer walks by. His hocks are getting dark so he is getting in the swing of things.

Per usual for any group of year and a half bucks -- they always have to mess with one another -- three sixers congregate. As I took this picture something had caught their attention. 

Then they all trotted off in that direction. I couldn't see what had their interest.

Twenty minutes later a doe walked around my frozen food plot and I got a picture of it standing near my water trough. But there's no drinking water today, it's a solid block of ice. 

AFTERNOON - More Water Hole Fans
By noon the temperature was above freezing and things thawed out. I went to the Point at 3:30 and got in my Double Bull Matrix, hoping to see wild turkeys. 
In the Double Bull I like to use the Pro-Ears to really reach out a long way and listen for turkeys. There were not any to hear this afternoon but when the sun dropped into the tree tops I heard the fence creek behind me. Footsteps followed. The stalking, careful kind. The steps came up behind my blind it got silent a minute. 

In the Pro-Ears I heard very soft breathing. Soft but distinctive, this was wild hogs. We both waited. Suddenly the leaves rustled loudly and 12 wild hogs raced for my watering hole.

These were young hogs. Not babies, but definitely not adult hogs either. They scarfed down water, rooted in the mud, and butted and chased each other around.

I waited patiently to see if a larger hog would show up. None did and before long the group exited down the farm road to the Point. And that was it for today.
