30 - There's Wild Turkeys Coming ...
Afternoon - The Point
was my choice for the afternoon hunt. I hid my truck in the cedars and
walked 150 yards through the thickest part of the woods, hopping not to
be seen, since it was a little late, just before 4:00. I slipped into the
blind (Double Bull), set my camera and bow down.
Woops!
Wild turkeys!
Yikes ... I ain't ready ...
The main group was hens
and they came from the field and worked their way along the fence toward
me and the water by my blind. Across the fence I saw a couple of birds
with red heads. First I took a picture (through the blind's mesh). You
can see a gobbler on the right walking along the fence.
Next, I put the camera down
and carefully and quietly I got an arrow out and loaded up. By now most
of the group was gathered around the water you see in the bottom right
of the picture, drinking. A 3rd gobbler came through the fence and stopped
15 yards away. I put my pin on his vitals and shot through the mesh.
Rats ... I missed.
Turkeys started zipping out
of the area. But the gobbler I had missed stopped at the cedar bush on
the left side of the above picture (20 yards). This time I aimed extra
carefully. With the same result.
When I inspected the cuts
in the mesh all the blades didn't cut right, as if the broadhead had caught
in the mesh some how.
Hmmmm, What o Do?
I was using an expandable broadhead, and I know, the directions that Double
Bull sends with the blinds say that many styles will not shoot well through
the mesh. But I had set up a blind in my yard and shot two of the broadheads
through it and they went fine. So I ignored the notification.
When I got home I
shot two arrows through the mesh of the blind I have set up there to practice.
It went fine. Conclusion ... it must be operator error.
But it wasn't ...
