Deer Hunt - A Bowhunt In Progress
The
2004 Bow Season - Late October
Oct 31 - The Eight Returns
Morning: Overcast
and drizzling rain. Today's is the last day of the official bow only season.
In the morning I hunted the rolled wire and early on 2 does were almost
in the right place for a shot at one when a high and wide, bomber 8-point
came out of no where and ran them in circles all around my tree.
I drew, just in case, but
the buck never slowed down enough to get my sight pin on him. The Rolled
Wire is a good area during the rut because does hang out there waiting
for bucks to come out of the dense woods to the west.
Afternoon:
I went to, you guessed it, the new site in the cedars where I put the Double
Bull blind and saw some bucks. The drizzle stopped and the sun occasionally
shown through the partly cloudy sky.
When the sun dropped below
the trees a buck stepped out of the cedar into the small opening in front
of the blind. The 8-point I got pictures of a couple days ago.
He was not cautious, he
casually strolled out of the brush.
We're looking through the
horizontal mesh window on the blind at the buck.
I get another pic through
the mesh as as he walked toward my shooting window. He steps in the clear
of the shooting window.

I get the camera lens too
close to the window and he sees something and checks it out. I freeze.

He doesn't know what he
saw and I see his nose flair, smelling. He is 10 yards away and the breeze
is blowing from me to him. Yikes!
Still looking at the
blind he fills his nose. He turns broadside, shaking his head, bringing
in every odor in the area. Good News! He doesn't smell me. He's broadside,
10 yards away, the perfect angle.
But
it's not his day for the game pole. Maybe I can find him two years from
now and I won't be thinking about taking pictures. I get one last pic as
he casually walks away.
Why didn't the buck smell
me? One detail that I attend to before I leave for the stand is to
get totally clean. Not just once a day either, I mean before the afternoon
hunt too. I brush my teeth with baking soda tooth paste and afterward I
do not eat or drink anything. I take a shower and get the smells of the
human world off me and then put on scent free camo clothes.
Getting the day's odors off
you makes a huge difference in your hunting. One mistake, one shortcut,
failing to get clean one time, can ruin the opportunity you are looking
for. I use the shampoo, bar soap, deodorant and wash my clothes (even my
every day clothes) in detergent from Wildlife
Research Center. It works, without question. I recommend it to
everyone.
Very nice afternoon. Life
is good indeed.
